Crespo threat over drug bans

Tuesday 4th December 2001

Lazio striker Hernan Crespo has threatened to lead a players' strike over the latest round of suspensions for positive nandrolone tests.

"We need transparency, otherwise we won't play," he said. "Someone has to explain how it is possible to fail a dope test when you are not taking an illegal substance."

Crespo's team-mate Jaap Stam has just been banned after testing positive for the steroid following a Serie A match against Atalanta in October.

Another Lazio defender, Fernando Couto, served a four-month suspension for the same offence last season, while Brescia midfielder Josep Guardiola is expected to quit football if he cannot overturn his own positive result.

All the players protest their innocence and Crespo admitted there was now a climate of fear at Italian clubs.

"I don't know anything about nandrolone and I'm scared about the possibility of being selected for a dope test because I don't know how it might turn up in my urine," he said.

"We don't even have the possibility to defend ourselves, so I am asking someone to explain how nandrolone works and how it is possible to fail a dope test for no good reason."

Or perhaps the thread title should be rephrased? :

Who thinks Crespo is the next Argentinian to come to the premiership (where apparently if you were taking drugs you would stand less chance of being sussed).

;)

Drug testing is not an exact science and different methodoligies can lead to different results, hence the disparity of Italian positives and potentially false positives. There needs to be an international standard for all drug testing and Fifa/UEFA need to make sure that they get it right so as to not unnecessarily ruin the reputaions of players who come of with false positives.

As a sidenote, a similar situation is going on here in the states, where a US Football player (Jimmy Smith) has tested positive for Cocaine and yet swears he's never used it. He's a model athlete on and away from the field. Needless to say, it has caused alot of controversy about the falability of drug tests.

Agreed.

Many cyclists professed their innocence during Tour de France, but many were just cheats. Including Pantani.

Crespo has no idea what Stam took. Only Jaap does.
