30 million is way too much for a player who is only valued so high as he's flavour of the month. Their are loads of equally good central defenders arouns for ½ that.
Instead of coming up with these names, we'll have to look at what we need.
Goalkeepers:
We have a good set of goalkeepers in Fab and Carroll. Yes, Barthez had a bad season. But unless we get someone like Buffon, it's hard to get someone better than Fab.
Conclusion: We do not need goalies.
Fullbacks:
In Gary Neville and Silvestre we have two established fullbacks. Both can be replaced, but it will be hard to find someone availavble that would actually improve the team considerable. A reliable back-up in Phil Neville, but we need at least one more full back.
Conclusion: One fullback needed, either one who improves the team or a back-up who can play on both flanks.
Center halves:
At the moment we have three centre halves (assuming Blanc stays), and two of them are inexperienced. We need a commanding and physical strong one, a Steve Bruce type player. If Blanc leaves, we need two more centre halves.
Midfield:
Simple: If Veron stays, no need to buy midfielders. If he leaves, we need to buy a back-up midfielder.
Strikers:
One pacey striker needed to complement Ruud, Ole and Forlan.
So, we need:
1 fullback
1 or 2 centre halves
1 striker
I'd go for:
Coly or Naysmith
Ferdinand & Purse
Duff
We'll be well covered in every position then

AEBM I commend you for the right idea about posting in this forum. It's tedious to the extreme to read yet anotgher post reporting that some bullshit website has linked us with another player or some paper suggesting we're about to spend more money than any team in the history of close seasons.
