Playing Football Manager the other day and I was trying to think of a team to start a new save with and it got me thinking who in English football are the most pointless team to support?

Personally, I'm ruling out all Premier League teams because I feel being in the Premier League alone makes it exciting enough even if you're a mid-table side. I've also ruled out League One, League Two and National League teams because they've got the Bristol Street Motor Trophy/FA Trophy, which basically anyone can potentially win, or at least make the final and a trip to Wembley..

That leaves just the Championship teams. So we're looking for a side, who every year make a few loan signings from Premier League clubs and their fans start to think they may have a chance but they get picked off in the early rounds of the cup competitions and don't quite ever make a push for the playoffs but are usually safe from the relegation battle.

Therefore, in my opinion, the winners of the most pointless team to support in England at this moment in time:

MK Dons. Rubbish plan, no history and a stupid name.
Milton Keynes is a bizarre shithole who couldn’t have their own team so they stole someone else’s. Nobody gives a flying feck about MK, they are the RB Leipzig of English football.

I know you said not PL, but (dis)honorary mention for Crystal Palace, a team who always managed to be far less than the sum of their parts.

Any no mark northern team in the shadow of all of the premier league giants in the north west.

Coventry.

MK Dons. Some of the clubs listed in here have a better history than Man City and shouldn't be considered.

The correct answer is MK Dons

Relegated last season, pushing for promotion this year. Playing Wimbledon on Saturday. Exciting times to be an MK Dons fan, if anyone is.

Shite, always hated them in the 90s for some reason, don’t know why.
Would’ve been a good answer in the 90s. I think they went about 40 years without ever finishing in the top 6 of any league or something mental.

Spurs.

Never win anything and never shit enough to have the excitement of avoiding relegation, at least that keeps Everton and West Ham fans interested.

They are just there and wouldn't be missed if they just disappeared.

Coventry.

I went to uni there and worked the turnstiles at Ricoh for two seasons. I have a soft spot for them. Nice club, locals aren't the most enthusiastic bunch about their club though, you could walk around Coventry and meet people and ask who they support and it would be 50/50 whether they said Coventry or some other club like Villa or United and the Cov fans you do meet, half of them aren't that passionate about their club. Pretty bleak now that I think about it.

I can see why they would be mentioned considering how they were created.

I've been around the stadium though and it's actually a decent area. If they ever become a big club I think it would make a lively matchday experience for a big match. There is loads around, they have a cinema right opposite and a load of shops and restaurants a stone throw away, plus bars etc. Quite atmospheric on a nice day.

Loads of land for more stuff too. If I were a billionaire I would consider investing in them and the area

Some good replies in this thread.

Calling a club ”pointless” screams ignoring ones privilege to me.

I say it in an objective way though, I don't actually think Preston are a pointless side. In fact, I've a bit of a soft spot for them as they regularly have Irish players on their books, but, looking at it from a factual point of view, they rarely give their fans anything to shout about. So they are not pointless, but supporting them could be considered a pointless endeavour.

Only if one considers winning or promotions the only important things about supporting a club. For millions of supporters, it’s about belonging and being part of a community. For them, it might take a smaller ”accomplishment” to add value to their support. Getting to playoffs or a deep cup run, for example. Or winning one of the smaller trophies (EFL Trophy etc).

Most clubs never win anything, so are they pointless? The sport would be boring as feck without all these ”pointless” clubs.

This feels like the discussion about legends of different clubs. ”But what did he win?” is such an elitist, privileged approach.

Some fans of the biggest clubs don’t consider their geographical rivals as rivals, because ”they haven’t won anything in X amount of years, so we’re not really rivals as we are fighting for trophies”.

To each their own I guess.

Edit: I do get the MK Dons shouts though. Created on nothing and the city seems as soulless as the club.

I feel like you're not reading me right. Where have I said it's all about winning? I specifically mentioned that getting into playoffs/deep into the cups is exciting. It's exciting to be part of a relegation battle, it gives you something to shout about. That one 0-0 draw away to that one mid-table side could be the most important result you've had in years.

As someone who follows one of my local sides in Ireland (I played in their schoolboy teams) who are probably never going to be promoted, who can't actually get relegated and are never anywhere in the cups, I know exactly how it feels to go to a game and think "What's the point?" Of course, it's great to see friends there and have that social aspect of it, but the club isn't really giving me that. I'd see them elsewhere anyway.

Anyway, it was just meant to be a bit of fun.

I think you might be taking this thread too seriously. :wenger:

Sorry, seems I indeed read you wrong.

Of course there is a distinction between clubs who have historically important matches and those who stay in the same league for decades. But even for them I guess it’s about being part of it and getting to the ground on a Saturday to support the local team.

Everton. They'll never get relegated, they're not gonna finish in a high position. Fans are always angry. Always lose to Liverpool. Complete waste of time.

Man City. They aren't a club anymore really, they just use the name of an old club.

Plymouth. Long travels a plenty so what's the point

Fecking Millwall or any other club with a strong fascist/neonazi component in their fanbase. I used to "know" a guy through a friend that was a literal nazi and was flying from Spain for their games. Twats

Millwall?

One of London's many clubs that no one gives a shit about unless they're local.

Most famous for being a fanbase full of absolute weapons, and have spent the bulk of the last 30 years as a mid-table championship side, with their most famous moment being taken the piss out of on only fools and horses.

No pointless teams but supporting Norwich must be annoying, come up look decent, get relegated without a fight, the club itself is not pointless nor the fans but the promotions are 100%
