I would say strangely Moyes would won this one. He bought Fellaini which in retrospect wasn't so bad for the amount of money we paid.

The worst would be ETH with 400m outlay and most of them are now deadwoods.

Ole gave us Bruno but saddle us with the likes of AWB and Sancho for a good amount of money spent.

Jose gave us Pogba, Lindelof, Sanchez, Mkhitaryan on top of my head Dalot and Lukaku. Lukaku at least was sold for close to what we paid him for.

What about LvG?

Interesting question.

In order to avoid endless debate about who was actually X's transfer (and not a "club transfer"), we should just look at players that were signed under X regardless of potential circumstances.

It's also a very hard question to answer, because you could regard the "success" of the player/transfer in all sorts of ways. And the overall context is what it is: United have been shite for a club with our ambitions/resources since SAF retired.

But some possible factors to consider:

Cost (fee/wages)
Games played
Games played under subsequent manager(s)
Trophies won (under this I suppose you could include "decent" league finishes, i.e. top 4 at the very least)

Solskjær bought Bruno so he alone blows every other manager out of the water

Moyes
Fellaini- Decent overall but became a symbol of our immediate failure post SAF
Mata- Decent

LVG
Herrera- Decent
Shaw- Good ( fitness issues prevent it from being a great signing)
Blind- Decent
Di Maria- Disaster
Falcao- Disaster
Rojo- okay signing I suppose. Not a great player but far from our worst signing.
Depay- Terrible
Schneiderlein- Terrible
Schweinsteiger- Terrible
Darmian- Terrible
Martial- Okay overall but can be classified as a bad signing taking into account the overall outlay and his availability.
Romero- Good
Valdes- Meh

Mourinho
Bailly- Bad
Pogba- Might be controversial but I'd say he was a good signing overall. Didn't reach the expected heights but had a fair few pretty good spells.
Zlatan- Good to great depending on your view
Mkhitaryan- Bad
Matic- Decent
Lukaku- Decent
Lindelof - Decent
Sanchez- Disaster
Dalot- Good
Grant- Meh
Fred- Decent

Ole
James- Okay/Decent given how we recouped more than what we paid for him
AWB- Okay/Decent. Not a top player but was fairly good in his first couple of seasons
Maguire- Okay. Despite the harsh criticism he receives, he's been decent for most of his spell with us. But not a top player.
Bruno- Great. Undisputably our best signing post SAF
Igahlo- Okay
DVB- Disaster
Telles- Okay
Cavani- Decent
Amad- Okay so far
Pellestri- Okayish so far. We will probably recoup what we paid for him
Varane- Decent
Sancho - Terrible so far
Ronaldo- Decent. Despite the acrimonious end, he himself performed decently in his season back here.

ETH
Martinez- Good
Malacia- Decent so far. Depends on how he recovers from his injury
Casemiro- Decent to bad depending on how you view it
Eriksen- Okay
Antony- Terrible verging on being a disaster
Dubravka- Meh
Weghorst- Okay
Sabitzer- Okay
Mount- Terrible so far
Hojlund- Decent to good so far
Onana- okay overall so far
Bayindir-Meh
Evans- Decent
Amrabat- Bad

Overall, Moyes had too small a sample size but neither of his signings were a disaster. LVG had perhaps the highest stinkers. Jose was decent overall, Sanchez being the one big aberration. Ole had the best single signing post SAF and was okay overall, but massive stinkers in DVB and Sancho. ETH hasn't had a standout signing with Martinez being injured so often and Antony is a clear disaster.

They're all so below average that it might be more appropriate to ask who has the least worse.

I'd agree with most of this, but feel like you could take the transfer fee more into account in some cases. For example, AWB and Maguire have had decent spells for the club like you say, but with the fees we paid, you would expect to get world class players. On the other hand, I'd consider Eriksen a pretty good signing given that we got him for free and that we needed a player in midfield - his downturn was sadly accelerated by Andy Carroll.

Good post. I do not agree that Di Maria was a disaster though. He was very good in the first half of the season and I think ended that season with most assists in EPL. LVG then started playing him as a striker (and Rooney in midfield), which made him lose form and eventually got benched.

Still it was an overall ok season and we got most of the money back in the summer. It definitely was not a Falcao, Antony, Sancho signing.

You can't seriously call Cavani just decent ? He scored 17 goals in 39 matches on a free transfer

Ole. Even Maguire / AWB had decent spells. Fernandes is the only signing post-Fergie that has been a remote success, with Cavani being second - also signed by Ole. Ronaldo didn’t work out overall but he still scored lots of goals.

I think overall Solskjaer did least damage to the squad with the players he brought in and who he allowed to leave. The worst was LvG, absolutely gutted our squad for peanuts in favour of bringing in big names and his favourites in the same was EtH has, but EtH at least let the right players go to do it.

How many of the signings are the managers or the boards? They loved making a big splash in the market to generate more revenue to siphon out of the club.

Moyes
Fellaini- Decent, who played for the badge and put a shift in, bailed us out a lot of times.
Mata- Decent, until his legs went.

LVG
Herrera- Decent
Shaw- Good, injuries ruined him
Blind- Decent
Di Maria- Disaster
Falcao- Disaster
Rojo- decent
Depay- Terrible- too young and wrong tactics
Schneiderlein- Terrible
Schweinsteiger- Terrible
Darmian- Terrible
Martial- Decent, injuries ruined him
Romero- Good
Valdes- Meh

Mourinho
Bailly- decent, always had a blunder in him but was decent overall
Pogba- good but over rated and not consistent enough to reach his potential
Zlatan- Good
Mkhitaryan- Bad
Matic- Decent
Lukaku- Decent
Lindelof - Decent
Sanchez- Disaster
Dalot- Good
Grant- Meh
Fred- Decent, could’ve been better with another decent CDM beside him

Ole
James- poor, not enough in his wheelhouse to make it in the Premier League
AWB- served a purpose, needs replaced
Maguire- Decent, lots of criticism but came through it and helped out when needed.
Bruno- Great. Undisputably our best signing post SAF
Igahlo- Decent
DVB- Disaster
Telles- Okay
Cavani- Too many injuries or he would’ve been a good signing for us
Amad- Okay so far, needs more game time to show what he can do.
Pellestri- Not great, needs moved on
Varane- Decent
Sancho - Terrible so far, needs sold
Ronaldo- good. Despite the acrimonious end

ETH
Martinez- brilliant, injuries hampered him.
Malacia- poor, too many injuries
Casemiro- good first season and this season has been a disaster but then so has most of the rest of the team.
Eriksen- Decent for a freebie
Antony- awful
Dubravka- Meh
Weghorst- awful
Sabitzer- awful
Mount- Terrible so far
Hojlund- Decent to good so far
Onana- very poor start but been decent since January
Bayindir- no real opinion
Evans- one of the better signings this season
Amrabat- Bad, maybe more game time in his position would’ve seen more from him. Decent last 2 games

I’m still fecking angry about that. The cnut wasn’t sent for that clear foul. He was eventually given a second yellow card, but should have sent off straight after injuring Eriksen. The injury to Eriksen was a watershed moment; we’ve been noticeably shit ever since.
You can't seriously call Cavani just decent ? He scored 17 goals in 39 matches on a free transfer
He was a decent signing overall. A lot of the signings on here are being judged too harshly IMO, while some are being remembered too fondly. However, Cavani deciding to be fit for international games but not for club games pissed me off.

Anyway, here is my summary of our signings from summer 2013 onwards:

Moyes
*Fellaini - absolutely horrific signing initially. We had Thiago lined up by Fergie only for Moyes to veto it and sign one of his players from Everton at a price higher than we could have signed him. Ultimately, not that bad - he turned out to be a reliable player from 2015 or so onwards.
*Mata - decent to good. The only problem is that we never played him in his best position and ultimately ended up letting him go on a free as he stayed at us until 2022.

LvG
*Herrera - decent to good. A very diligent player who seemed to love the club. Losing him to PSG in 2019 was a big blow.
*Shaw - good to great, but he’s never really recovered from the horrific injury that the thundercnut Moreno inflicted on him in September 2015.
*Blind - pretty decent/meh
*Di María - great at first, I remember his great performance against QPR in September 2014. However it was ultimately horrific - he was robbed, and never liked it here. He left us for PSG, and throve there.
*Falcao - disappointing, he was never the same after his injury and we signed him too late
*Rojo - decent
*Depay - mediocre
*Schneiderlin - mediocre
*Schweinsteiger - I don’t know why but I liked having him here. He was too old but he loved the club and gave his all. I know about him fecking off at points, but it was pretty cool having him play. I wasn’t really as interested in football from between 2013-2021; I was still interested, but not massively.
*Darmian - decent
*Martial - decent at first, had a great start, fantastic season in 2019-20, horrible since 2020
*Romero - decent
*Valdés - didn’t play enough

Mourinho
*Bailly - too many injuries. Very chaotic, better player in 21-22 than Maguire
*Pogba - very mixed. He did have some great moments but also some absolute lows. Won the World Cup with France in 2018 (I’m only mentioning this because I’m watching a BBC documentary about Mbappé)
*Ibrahimović - great. He was ancient when we signed him but scored a lot until he got injured in February. If he hadn’t gotten injured, we probably would’ve finished higher.
*Mkhitaryan - decent
*Matić - good-ish, but we signed him too late
*Lukaku - decent
*Lindelöf - mediocre
*Sánchez - probably the most disappointing football transfer ever. We had such high expectations, but he flopped massively.
*Dalot - pretty decent, has improved recently and is one of the best of a bad bunch this season
*Grant - didn’t play enough
*Fred - meh. He had some great performances, but too many absolutely awful performances that were on the level that Rashford has delivered this season

Solskjær
*James - mid-table signing, we did manage to make a rare profit though
*AWB - was pretty good after the World Cup last season, otherwise mediocre at best, mid-table signing
*Maguire - great initially up to the Greece incident, horrific 21-22 season, been decent-ish this season
*Bruno - absolutely fantastic initially, single-handedly got us third place in first half season. He’s been nowhere near as good since 2021
*Ighalo - decent
*Van de Beek - waste of money. I considered him a decent signing up until 2022, as he was dropped for Fred. Been hardly played since, has been loaned out, suffered injuries, and been mediocre at best.
*Telles - meh. Not good enough and also deserved to have been sold after he celebrated Sevilla beating us when he was on loan to them last season
*Cavani - decent first season, not so good second season as, as I mentioned, he declared himself unfit for us but somehow fit for national team games.
*Amad - only started getting game time this season. He’s decent, one for the future.
*Pellistri - not good enough
*Sancho - was okay at first, but ultimately bad
*Varane - pretty decent first two seasons, formed a great centre-back pairing with Martínez last season. Has been frozen out and injured most of this season. Will be leaving, probably on a free.
*Ronaldo - I was fecking stoked when he rejoined us, as even though I was 10 when he left the first time around, I didn’t like football at the time and only started following football and United in 2010. Had a good start to his second spell, but the season ended up a complete disaster (though compared to this season it’s a roaring success). Was our top scorer and bailed us out numerous times, including hat-tricks against Spurs and Norwich. Ultimately had a very bitter end.

ten Hag
*Malacia - decent first season up until his horror mistake against Sevilla in the first leg of the Europa League quarter final, which ultimately cost us the tie. Has been injured this entire season with no sign of him ever coming back.
*Martínez - great first season, our best centre-back since Vidić left. Second season has been completely plagued by injuries.
*Eriksen - as I said, good until Carroll injured him (although was awful in the Arsenal game a week before), been a shadow of his former self since
*Casemiro - fantastic first season until the bogus suspensions in January/February/March. Horrific second season
*Antony - decent initially, awful since
*Dubravka - didn’t play enough, had a nervy game against Burnley in the League Cup
*Butland - didn’t play at all
*Weghorst - absolutely horrific, despite his decent work rate he scored 2 goals in 29 games - less than 1 goal every 10 games - which is an extremely abysmal output for a striker
*Sabitzer - decent
*Mount - stupid, unnecessary signing
*Heaton - hasn’t played, cool to have him back after leaving in the summer of 2010, befofe I became a fan of United in the autumn of that year (the biggest player who played for us in 09-10 but not in the next season was Ben Foster), obviously very old
*Onana - good first two games, horrific from then until January, been mediocre to good since
*Højlund - good considering the circumstances, very promising kid
*Evans - supposed to be a stopgap, done well in his second spell at the club
*Bayindir - he performed well in his only game for us (the FA Cup fourth round game against Newport)
*Reguilón - decent despite injuries
*Amrabat - again, very promising, had a great first proper game in the league cup against Crystal Palace, been poor since but okay in the last two games

I also remember reading on this site that we signed some bloke called Andy Kellett on loan from some team like Bolton (I think), something of which I have next to zero recollection.

Fair enough you can call him a good singing. I was also taking into account his 2nd season where he seemed tuned out for the most part. Though I understand there were extenuating circumstances.

Good post. I do not agree that Di Maria was a disaster though. He was very good in the first half of the season and I think ended that season with most assists in EPL. LVG then started playing him as a striker (and Rooney in midfield), which made him lose form and eventually got benched.

Disaster is maybe being too harsh but I wouldn't call him a good signing. We lost 15 million on him and he was here just for 1 season, where as you say for the 2nd half he barely featured. He had a great start but he seemed out of favor before the turn of the year.

Yeah, it was a weird signing as it was at odds with LvG’s defensive style of play. Ultimately he didn’t seem to like living in England, and I remember his wife calling English women ugly or something like that.
