There are so many conflicting messages, not just about transfers....although the number of conflicting messages about de Jong is totally confusing. So who seems to be the most trustworthy ( if you can call any journalist trustworthy. Trustworthy journalist, honest politician....both misnomers)

The broadsheets are typically the ones you go to for reliability like Times, Guardian, Telegraph etc.

Although it’s more about the actual journalists reliability than the actual newspaper. Some newspapers which are considered less reliable as a whole, do have journalists who are clued up on matters and in the know, whether it be for a certain club, a certain part of the country or whether they’re buddied up with high profile agents.

Newspaper and trustworthy don't belong in the same sentence.

I wouldn't trust any newspaper. David Ornstein of The Athletic is a reliable journalist though.

The Athletic is the most reliable as they swept up all the journalists with good sources across all leagues and sports. Now they've been acquired by New York Times' parent company.

In terms of outlets I'd generally look towards the BBC, the broadsheets and The Athletic. Though within that it varies by journalist.

In terms of the journalists Simon Stone is probably the most reliable but (not coincidentally) tends to report on transfer dealings less frequently than others. Ornstein at The Athletic is very reliable too and more transfer-focused.

Below that the likes of Ducker, Whitwell, etc.

The Athletic I would say, they certainly picked up the vast majority of the best placed journalists within PL clubs. In terms of old fashioned paper newspapers, probably The Times?

But it varies club by club; some clubs have very close connections with journalists at their local newspapers and as such those journalists don't get involved in speculation so much and would prefer to wait before only reporting something when they have confirmed it with multiple sources. But most of those are now with The Athletic anyway.

@trevor newnham we have a pretty comprehensive overview here on the forums which covers the reputation of media outlets who tweet about transfers.

Just above the banned list table at the bottom you'll find a link to the Football Transfer Reliability Guide which details who is in which tier.

The guide is continuously updated (so it says) and if you look at the bottom of that page you'll see several tabs which will let you switch between Utd transfers and other team transfers, as well as general aggregators. Most of the answers to your questions about newspapers or other media outlets should be covered there.

Probably the Express, the Star or (for sport as the name suggests) the Daily Sport

I started buying the daily sport back in the day because I thought it would be full of sport on a daily basis......soon realised it was a twitchers' delight as it was full of great tits instead‍:wenger:

For sports news, maybe the bbc?

For world news, none of the western news outlets are reliable.

Private Eye is the only 'newspaper' I read. It's surprisingly accurate on many political situations, many times before any of the established dailys know what's happening, attacking all colours of the political spectrum, and is particularly hard on corruption. I wouldn't buy any of the current papers.
BBC for sports news.

If you want reliability don’t read newspapers. Each club has its own mouthpieces in the media. Ours are Laurie Whitwell, Simon Stone and a few YouTube fan channels though I forget which ones.

the daily mail tends to the most sense on all aspects of life, whether or not it be reporting on what celebrity has been seen falling out of a night club, which footballer might join united, or how brown people are ruining my life.

Yes, I agree.

The Athletic are good at making sense out of transfers but absolutely no one seems to be trusthworthy, because when they hear a rumour, the "according to sources" card gets played.

This means that they dont have to be held accountable for any deal that was announced and never happened.

SkySports just use rags as sources in any gossip in football, its a misleading disgrace.

How come MEN is not reliable? I would expect that newspapers from bloody Manchester would and should know everything about club.

Talking about newspapers, The Athletic is the most trustworthy newspaper about Manchester United Transfer, they have the best individual quality in David Ornstein and Laura Whitwell. The important source that comes very close is BBC Sport especially Simon Stone.

Tier 1 would be -BBC Sports

-The Athletic

Tier2 newspapers are consists of a lot of foreign newspapers outside of United Kingdom like Sport1 and Kicker from Germany, De Telegraaf from Netherlands, Caderna SER from Spain and RMC Sports from France. From UK, it would be the telegraph, which Matt Law has worked with.

Tier2 would be -Sport1
-Kicker
-De Telegraaf
-Caderna SER
-The Telegraph
-RMC Sports

Outside of that are probably tier3-tier5 newspapers, which are average-low liability, shit posters or banned sources like Daily Stars, Daily Mail, Metro, Express or other foreign sources.

I'm talking only newspapers for individuals it's different story.

People tend to base whether they trust a sports journalist based on the political position of the newspaper they work for, which never made sense to me

They and the Liverpool Echo have the same issues. They have solid connections with their cities' respective clubs, but they also get incredibly speculative online and function like bad aggregators as well. There's always that notable Casey Evans Tweet where he assumed that BILD were linking us to Evan N'Dicka despite BILD never linking United to the player.

The Guardian’s United coverage was excellent until Jamie Jackson came along. Now it’s awful; entirely because of him. It’s still less ABU prone than the rest though.

I know its not a 'newspaper' and while i'm not always their biggest fan, if its a transfer related and its mentioned on the BBC then its legit.
