been ages since i last played one, probably 2008, anyway which is the best one to acquire?? i dont care about all the fancy extra stuff you can do, i just want to know which one runs well and has a decent up to date patch. dont think 2010 will run on my laptop

The best is the latest one.

I don't understand why you'd play any previous ones. For the past 5-6 years
the game has essentially been one continuously updated and patched version of what has come before.

2001 - People have nostalgic memories of this. It was fun for a dirty quick and easy run through but it is so outdated now it wouldn't even be worth installing.

Is there anyway to get around the PC requirements for 2010, my laptop only has a 1.66GHZ processor but on the box it says I need a minimum 2.0GHZ

There's a patch out there updating CM01/02 to modern day, you know.

With the right squads, competition formats, even the year.

It doesn't check the processor speed, but the processor. Mine is 1.83 GHz but it runs the game, although it is pitifully slow. What's your processor?

If it doesn't fit the processor requirements, though, and it's possible to force it, then it will be really, really slow.

To be honest that reflects what is going to happen in the future. We'll be watching as Manchester City and Chelsea see who can piss the most money away while we look at "value".

Well yes. But it's still really annoying and ruins the game I thinks. Especially in 2009 whenever a team was linked with a player Man City would make a bid, and usually end up buying them. There squad is usually the equivalent of 3 pages long  and they never play any of them either.

I've got a 1.6gGHz N270 Intel Atom Processor

I still play FM 2008(8.02), I have played both 2009 and 2010 versions and haven't really enjoyed it that much.

I wouldn't run the game on an Intel Atom processor - not at all! It would be really slow. It's not the processor speed that hurts it, but the fact that Intel Atom processors are designed for low power consumption, not performance.

Does it matter? I've got an Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 1.3GHz designed for low power consumption that still runs it fairly well. Mind you, with an Atom that probably comes in a computer with not much RAM, and I've got 4 gigs of it.

Well, the Intel Atom is really designed for really low-power, low-voltage (unlike the low-voltage Core 2 lines). Think netbooks, while the Core 2 Duo SU-series are designed for ultraportable laptops. The Intel Atom is very slow compared with the Core 2 Duo, just as netbooks are very slow compared with ultraportables.
