FULL ENGLAND U21 SQUAD
to face Yugoslavia at the Reebok Stadium on Friday:

Ameobi (Newcastle), Barry (Aston Villa), Bramble (Newcastle), Clarke (Everton), Crouch (Aston Villa), Defoe (West Ham), Etherington (Tottenham), Evans (Chelsea), Howarth (York), Jeffers (Arsenal), Jenas (Newcastle), Kirkland (Liverpool), Konchesky (Charlton), Lescott (Wolves), O'Neil (Portsmouth), Parnaby (Middlesbrough), Pennant (Arsenal), Piper (Sunderland), Prutton (Nottingham Forest), Samuel (Aston Villa), Taylor (Portsmouth), Wright-Phillips (Manchester City).

It's quite sad that we dont have a single representitive at U21 level. No wonder SAF has chosen to freshen his youth staff up.

:(

Im very surprised that ex red devil Michael Tonge of Sheff Utd is not in there. 19 years old, brilliant on the ball. Future star without a doubt.

If he is so good, why did we get rid? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Our suffer from not being able to get first team games.

Also, a lot of the them are Scots or Irish. If you look at the U-18's we have about 5 or 6 players in the squad.

The gooners have Jeffers and scousers have Kirkland and they don't start for their club but still where are our players, maybe they get overlooked after they have played at U19 level.

The problem is that most of our young players aren't getting anywhere near the first team. Most, if not all, the players in the U21 side are playing every week for their clubs.
I was, however, suprised at Danny Webber not being included, he's been in fantastic form for Watford.
Unless our younger players are given a chance they will probably not be considered by David Platt

Webber has picked up a slight injury. I presume Chadwick is now too old. Our reserve side has a lot of good non-english players in it though, so I'm not too worried by this, though I do like us to have an english core to the team.

its a shame...

we're not spotting young talent...like wenger, apparently, he's got many exellent contacts throught france and africa... he's recently aquired a young player from the Ivory Coast...who he played on Sunday.

I think we are still spotting the young players but it just happens that at the moment they aren't English. Michael Stewart and Darren Fletcher played for Scotland U21's last week.

But they didn't find these players themselves, they bought them. Pennant, Jenas, Crouch and Bramble were all bought too, and maybe some more in that squad that I don't know of. We should be buying some of the best young players too. We had Etherington and Simon Davies on trial when they were at Peterborough but we let them go to Spurs.

I am encouraged by the number of lads in the Irish, Scotish and Welsh U21's.

It still begs the question "where are the local lads?"

Have they changed the water in Salford and Manchester then. Too much Evian?!?

Where's the next generation of Scholes, Nevilles, Butts, Browns etc?

It goes through cycles, United aren't going to bring in youngsters from the local area if they don't think they are good enough. Our youth academy has built itself on producing the best youngster and ones worthy of wearing the red jersey.
Football is a global game, while i would love to see United win the premiership with a predominately English side, if the youth scouts don't believe the english youngsters around at the moment are good enough then they are right not to take them on. Who knows in 5 years we could see some real quality english youngster start to emerge through the united ranks
