Was he injured? Was it something to do with his comments about Fab? Rested? Working for the Red Cross? On a bender?
Any ideas anyone?

Carroll is a decent keeper.

Is that damning with faint praise ? Maybe that's the reason Ricardo was bought.

Carroll dealt with crosses just fine last night. Only spilled one but that was because he was fouled. His distribution was really good as well for most part; he reminded me of Schmeichel the way he was always looking for quick throw outs for us to counter attack.

Carroll's problem is that he had a chance to make the g/k spot his own when Barthez was injured and he rather blew it unfortunately. It was then that we signed Ricardo effectively relegating Roy to no 3. I don't think SAF has that much confidence in Roy.<hr></blockquote>
I read somewhere (possibly RedIssue - will check) that SAF thought Barthez might need an operation and that's why he bought an extra keeper but, in the end, Barthez didn't need the operation after all. Don't know if this is true or SAF was just saying it to disguise the obvious.

That's absolutely true, as he was bought when Fab was injured. Barthez had said that one month ago in France. If he had wanted to replace Barthez, Ricardo would be playing.

How do you work that one out then?

I seem to remember Ricardo as the keeper who conceded 5 as Real Madrid beat Real Valladolid 5-0. My first thought when I heard we signed him was "yeah right pull the other one".</strong><hr></blockquote>
Schmeichel once conceded 5 to Newcastle mate.

He may be the Spanish no2, but if he hasn't made no1 by 30 he probably never will.</strong><hr></blockquote>
A bit difficult that, especially when you consider that they have IMO the best keeper in Europe (Canizares) ATM, along with IMO the best young keeper in Europe (Casillas) ATM. I would put both in my top 5 keepers in Europe list.

I love the way ppl make these judgements despite having seen the individuals play only a couple of times.
