In the pub last night my mates and I were discussing ex-United youth players, who were all tipped to shine, but ended up elsewhere.

Anyone remember these names?;

Ben Thornley
Chris Casper
Kevin Pilkinton
Michael Twiss
Graeme Tomlinson
Alex Notman
John Curtis
Danny Higginbotham
Nicky Culkin
John O'Kane
Michael Ryan
Richard Wellens
Ronnie Wallwork
Jovan Kirovski
Erik Nevland
David Healey
Phillip Mulryne

Plenty more...

Ben Thornley - was at Aberdeen last season, not sure now
Chris Casper -
Kevin Pilkinton -
Michael Twiss - Left for Sheff Utd, dunno now
Graeme Tomlinson - Macclesfield?
Alex Notman - Norwich
John Curtis - Bburn
Danny Higginbotham - Derby
Nicky Culkin - QPR
John O'Kane - Was at Bradford, dunno now
Michael Ryan - not in pro football
Richard Wellens -
Ronnie Wallwork - West Brom
Jovan Kirovski -
Erik Nevland - back at Viking
David Healey - Preston
Phillip Mulryne - Norwich

Remember all of them, but were any of them good enough to play for United?
Ben Thornley ended up at Aberdeen, not sure if he's still there or not.
Graeme Tomlinson was signed from lower league and went back there into obscurity.
I think John Curtis is still at Blackburn Rovers.
John O'Kane went to Everton (I think) then disappeared down the leagues.
I think Richard Wellens went to Blackpool.
Southampton have just had a £2million bid turned down for Danny Higginbottom by Derby County.
Philip Mulryne went to Norwich, broke his leg, but is back now and playing well.
David Healy had one great season at Preston but doesn't seem to be in Craig Brown's plans now.
Erik Nevland scored twice to knock Chelsea out of the UEFA Cup for his Norwegian side this season.
Ronnie Wallwork not getting much of a look-in after his Bosman move to West Brom.
Jovan Kirovski - has he scored a couple recenty for Birmingham or is that a different Kirovski?
I think Alex Notman went on loan to Norwich City (or another First Division side) and did quite well. Also missing in action now.
Another name - Terry Cooke. Had a blinder against Bolton on his Premiership debut and scored against York City (away) in the League Cup. Went to City then disappeared as well.

Going further back there were players like Nicky Wood (credited with a goal in the old first division which was deflected in off him, not sure who against but United won the match 3-2 I think). Welsh striker Deniol Graham played in a famous FA Cup win over OPR away in the late eighties when United were really struggling.
Tony Gill also played in that match but broke his leg so badly soon afterwards that he had to give up the game.

What I'd really like to know is what ever happened to William Prunier?

I'm pretty sure he's still at Macclesfield.

Micheal Twiss spent some time at Sheff Utd after us but dont know where he went from us.

Pat McGibbon, who was tipped to be 'the next Gary Pallister' went to Wigan, and is now playing fulltime irish league footy with Portadown.

Tomlinson's actually back at Bradford!!

this is going back a few years, but does anyone remember a young irish winger by the name of Adrian Doherty?
This is around the same time that giggs was coming through. He was one of the best wingers ive ever seen from these shores. Had a neat trick where he could run with the ball, and with every kick make it backspin into his path again.
its kind of sad what happened to him..
picked up an injury at united, became stressed out, went to uni in manchester, came home to ireland and played for derry city for a while.
he then next made the news by falling into a canal in Amsterdam and was on a lifesupport machine. Not sure if he lived or died?

Prunier I think is at a Frech club called Tolouse

Posted a similar list yesterday in the Chadwick thread. Very few of those who have left have really looked like they may have stood a chance at United with Higginbotham and Gillespie being the only 2 immediate examples.

Kirowski is doing well at Birmingham at the moment and time will tell what we were robbed of by the work permit rules.

Thornley, O Kane and Wellens are all at Blackpool which appears to have taken over from Preston as the United youth retreat. Healy is still plugging away at Preston but is less prolific than he was whilst Macken has moved on to City.

Michael Twiss moved from Sheffield downwards to Port Vale and is now in the conference with Chester.

The only big surprise of the old boys was David Johnson who left United for Bury with the reputation of being lazy, he was fitful at Bury before finally shining at Ipswich and earning a 3 million quid move to Forest where he is still doing well having scored 21 so far this season.

What ever happened to Russel Beardsmore/Lee Martin. Lee scores the winning goal in the cup final and is never heard from again and Beardsmore was starting to break into the team and then he dissapeared

Lee Martin went to Celtic, then im not sure where too from there.
Beardsmore spent many years at Bournemouth, playing midfield and rightback before sadly having to quit due to injury.

I'd forgotten about him!

Think Lee was at Bristol Rovers for a while after Celtic, must be retired by now though as he was from the time when I was younger than the youth players rather than today when it's just Larry White who makes me feel young.

Did you know that his brother plays for Altringham, and is a masseur for United and England?

Gaz Nevile is also engaged to his sister Hannah too!

full story

Lee Martin retired injured. He had talks with Robbo when he was Boro boss but he got injured soon after that and the move didn't come to anything. My brother met him on holiday in Blackpool once, nice bloke apparently.

yeah, I've read about him not too long ago.
Too bad he's got bad luck with injuries.
I think he's at Preston when he retired.
Anybody remember Jon Mackem? went to PNE from United with Casper if I'm not mistaken, is he still there?

Moved to City in the summer. Boo!!!

I think Lee went to Nottingham Forest and had that back injury again and retired

I had the prievelage of watching Sheffied United play Wartford when Webber was still down their last year and this kid called Tonge was kicking butt and the Commentator said he used to be a Man Utd player. With what he did I figured he would kick Liverpools arse last night. And he sure did........ :D :p :p I LOVE SCOUSE MISERy. DON"T YOU? :p
