When there are problems logging in

As both Weastie and GB are aware I've had a problem logging in since last Saturday.

My email address had changed and I've spent the last three days trying to get back into the caf. What I found a problem was that although I followed procedure, I was getting nowhere.

I did not know of any other way of contacting either the caf's administration or mods and out of desperation (I've got to get a life!), I decided to re-register as a newbie and then immediately contact a mod in the hope that he/they could solve my problem - which they did (after a hiccup), very well (thanks).

I'd like to suggest as an idea that might help anyone else who might find themselves in my situation and something that might improve the service to members.

When I had no way of contacting either the admin or the mods but I could still access the caf as a guest, I thought that if the site had something like an emergency button which would allow anyone to send a message to the admin/mods for their attention then that would help. The button would allow for the sending of PM by all regardless of their status.

Any abuse of this emergency button by say WUM could result in some form of punishment if need be.

I think you can e-mail most of the mods without logging in, if you look at the forum leaders page.

The emergency button thing's a nice idea, but people probably couldn't be trusted with it, and it'd be hard to punish someone who isn't even logged in

I guess you could IP ban the Panic Button as well?

Wouldn't want your PM boxes full of shit. :nervous:
Not all IP's are unique to one person though. It would be very difficult

I tried that but it didn't work.

When I tried to send an email or a PM, I was denied because my status was not recognised.

The panic button goes to our e-mails I think, as do the "report post" things. I never read my e-mail box that I'm registered here with, well, almost never.

On a related note, when I was banned, every time I tried to use the contact admin button, it told me I couldn't because I was banned.

Which I thought was a bit silly.

Well, I suppose it's for stopping banned madmen from flooding whatever box it is.

Exactly.

Hmmm

The "Contact Us" option isn't much use for this either

That's the problem but everything has an advantage/disadvantage. A knife in the kitchen is a great tool but it can kill too.

The thing is there are WUM but also others with genuine problems too.

Well, there must be a way to do it, because a certain person did it this morning after being banned. Directly to the bossman.

It works in that you can use it

I think only Niall gets the e-mail though

Well, that's it!

He was around yesterday, and this morning, that would have solved the bother.

I've sent many of those since the weekend. I was getting no luck until I took the risky step of re-registering. Niall (no doubt) is a busy man. It can't been easy running this site and handling admin too.

When I re-registered as a newbie I risked been banned. If Westie hadn't got my PM and responded immediately I might have been banned for good.

No you wouldn't have, you could have joined as 032DevilIII

The thing we do not understand is why you didn't simply reregister and then stick a "FAO MODS" topic in the newbie.

Like I said in my PM to you, I didn't want to start a thread and draw attention to a personal problem. That's why I sent you a PM as I knew you were online and would tackle it immediately.

Next time (I suppose) I'll shout louder and start a "FAO: Mods" thread.

But that still does not solve the problem which I faced and the solution I've suggested which might tackle that. With a change of my email address I was not being recognised and re-registering is a long-winded way around a problem which is probably not unique. Afterall, people change email addresses all the time.

I spent a good few hours getting around the problem today. I just suggesting there might be a simpler solution with the 'emergency button' idea.

The thing was, I appeared online, but I had gone out with the missus to take the baby for a nice evening walk. I then got back about 15 minutes too late and then GB had canned you and gone offline himself. So we had to wait an hour or two.

Also, changing an e-mail address shouldn't be a problem. As long as you update your e-mail address correctly in the user control panel.

maybe admin should look at the miserable user option you can get with Vb

you dont ban anyone, but they cant physically log in, it will appear to the user that there PC is faulty.

it saves any discrespecy.
