When creating a new thread, an option to see "similar" threads?

Just a crazy idea that popped into my head whilst reading these forums at 3am.

I'd first like to say that I have absolutely no clue when it comes to coding, so it may be that this is totally impossible and I'm just wasting everyone's time by suggesting it.

Hoping that is not the case, though, I'll carry on :p

What I was thinking was if it is possible that, when creating a new thread, the forum might supply a small list of similar threads. So, for example, if I created a thread entitled "Nani in today's match", it would, in this window I've made up, show me "Nani Today" and "So what was Nani like today?". Obviously it would only be able to show recent threads, because otherwise you might be linked to a Nani thread from a month ago.

Mainly basing it off a quick scan of the words in the title would help generally, I think. It wouldn't prevent some double-threads, but most topic starters here seem to have a good idea of how to title their threads, and so this could pick up on that. It obviously wouldn't be flawless, and would sometimes display threads that were either not relevant, or different. It would be the topic-starters responsibility to check them and make sure they weren't the same.

Overall, however, it would just mean that when people start a new thread about a topic they can have no excuse if there was already a thread in circulation. It would, when they were creating it, clearly state that similar threads were already in existance on the boards.

Probably a shit idea, but hey. It's late ^^

I think the idea is an excellent one Soebek, whether it is possible or not is questionable. I won't comment on that part of it because I don't know if it is or isn't actually possible.

I do like the idea though, it would prevent double-threads and also help users see what other threads are related to the ones they thought they might create.

I believe a similar feature is available in the private messaging software. When you type in a poster's name, it automatically goes through the user database and locates posters by similar names.

I haven't seen such a feature or a mod but there may well be one. If it is like the username matching one on the search facility it would be useless because anything short of a complete match fails to register.

I'll have a look about

I've found one and posted it for Niall to evaluate. It doesn't look that efficient to me but we will see.
