What's the best team of Grey Men you can come up with?

The term 'gray man' (or 'grey man' in British English) describes someone who looks unassuming and who doesn't stand out from the crowd, but is in fact well equipped for an emergency situation. In crisis situations, there are benefits to going unnoticed and blending in.

Every time I watch Newcastle, Anthony Gordon is doing a sterling job on both sides of the ball. He's one of the best athletes in the division and is nightmarishly difficult to shake off because of his pace, stamina and tenacity. Come the end of a game, however, he's essentially forgotten whilst plaudits are sent off in the direction of Isak and the midfield bruisers in the middle. For me, thus far, Gordon comes across as a grey man, who doesn't seem to standout or leave a lasting impression in the mind's eye of supporters.

Until Keane and United fans in general made a big fuss about him, Irwin was such a figure, imo. Constantly and quietly delivering rock solid performance whilst earning little to no credit with massive personalities all over the team being singled out for praise instead of him.

I'm wondering what the best "Grey Team" would look like. A team of unassuming players who quietly and efficiently make/made enormous contributions to their club(s) without the merit usually reserved for such.

Can you produce a quality xi of such players?

Lehmann
Neville Costacurta Carvalho Milner
Mendieta Cocu Cambiasso Kuyt
Giroud Dzeko

Lehmann is too much of a nutter to not stand out, and Giroud (the bastard) is too good looking the be 'grey' imo.

Swap Van der Sar in for Lehmann and Miroslav Klose in for Giroud if you like.

I'll try and not re-use any players. Wonder how far we can go until they're shite/not 'grey' enough...

Toldo
Sagnol Nacho Montero Capdevila
Carrick
Albertini Albelda
Camoranesi Milito Pedro

Pedro is an absolutely fantastic shout.

I think Lehmann, Mendieta and Carvalho were all genuine superstars for a period of time - widely regarded as among the best in the world in their position. Mendieta won UEFA 'midfielder of the year' two years in succession, Carvalho won UEFA 'defender of the year' in 2003.

From that Valencia team I always thought that Angulo was a bit underrated, and Jorge Costa for Porto - he was the real leader of the team.

k.navas
juanfran costacurta schwarzenbeck azpilicueta
schneider carrick gabi donadoni
firmino milito

pretty much you almost make your underrated XI

i think the most ruthlessly efficient grey men were the ones that came down and probed me.

Some great shouts in here - Juanfran, Milito, Albelda, Pedro, Cocu - so keeping it fresh with new names:

Klos
M. Pablo - Buchwald - Zmuda - Pessotto
Di Livio - Fletcher - Sergio - Park
De Boer - Nilis

....Paolo Montero? The man Vinnie Jones prays to?
That's fair, I forgot that he was actually a bit of a nutter/shithouse. I guess the Jens Lehmann rule applies to him too.

Come on - that's a team of superstars! At least from midfield to forwards

Was it? It was a team of unsung heroes for the most part.

Marcos Senna got recognition when he was in his 30's due to his contributions to the 2008 Spain Euro's win. He never got his move to a big club and made 28 caps for Spain in total. That's less than what Michael Carrick got for England.

Michael Essien was always overshadowed by his midfield partner Lampard, and only when he declined due to injury and then left, did Chelsea realize how much of a downgrade Ramieres was and it wasn't until Kante that they fully replaced him.

Pablo Aimar also never got his shot at a massive club, and his prime was between Valencia, Zaragoza and Benfica.

Diego Milito got his move to Inter at the age of 30, had barely any caps for Argentina and most of them were as a bench player.

Thomas Muller is the classical grey man. Couldn't dribble, wasn't that fast, wasn't a great crosser or a great passer, yet was one of the first names on the teamsheet for Bayern and Germany alike.

Edison Cavani was always overshadowed at the peak of his career by someone else.

What all these players had in common was their reliability (when fit, in the case of Essien), game changing moments and extreme grit and determination, despite not being regarded as "The man" for their respective teams or in the eyes of the general public.

all very subjective off course but

Peruzzi
Maxwell Medel Ayala Azpilicueta
Etxeberria Guti Vicente
Recoba Hamsik
Salas

Vincente was never a grey man. He was just overrated because of his time at Real Betis.

Medel was far too much of a controversial figure on the pitch to be regarded in this imo.

Guti was shoehorned into the Galacticos and was often unrealiable. Not entirely his fault but a midfield consistently of Zidane - Beckham - Guti - Figo is not the most balanced in the world and Guti often left Beckham exposed.

Vicente never played for Betis? Im talking about the Valencia maestro, injuries were pretty bad for him but he's never been highly regarded much in conversations about players and he was very instrumental for Valencia, Medel i give you but Guti was an awesome player and never got much recognition for his worth to the team, before Becks turned up he was a pretty solid player

I can almost make a decent United team out of it

There is zero creativity in that midfield or forward line

This relies entirely on Joaquin, as Pedro requires runners around him and it's essentially operating with 3 DM's.

The fact that grey men don’t stand out from the crowd, greatly limits the creators in the team. Scholes who’d be a grey man without his extraordinary skills is the example of this. Also handsome guys or players that attract attention because of their look greatly limits modern players - this is also why I dont think Gordon is a grey man. Too much with his bleached hair and too much controversy at Everton.
