The term 'gray man' (or 'grey man' in British English) describes someone who looks unassuming and who doesn't stand out from the crowd, but is in fact well equipped for an emergency situation. In crisis situations, there are benefits to going unnoticed and blending in.
Every time I watch Newcastle, Anthony Gordon is doing a sterling job on both sides of the ball. He's one of the best athletes in the division and is nightmarishly difficult to shake off because of his pace, stamina and tenacity. Come the end of a game, however, he's essentially forgotten whilst plaudits are sent off in the direction of Isak and the midfield bruisers in the middle. For me, thus far, Gordon comes across as a grey man, who doesn't seem to standout or leave a lasting impression in the mind's eye of supporters.
Until Keane and United fans in general made a big fuss about him, Irwin was such a figure, imo. Constantly and quietly delivering rock solid performance whilst earning little to no credit with massive personalities all over the team being singled out for praise instead of him.
I'm wondering what the best "Grey Team" would look like. A team of unassuming players who quietly and efficiently make/made enormous contributions to their club(s) without the merit usually reserved for such.
Can you produce a quality xi of such players?
