what was he smoking?

heres you chance to list the biggest mistakes we have made in the transfer market! i would say poborsky of recent times, even though he did end up @ ss lazio!

i think that purchase ended up being bad as far as performances....i think the jordi and veron purchases were uncesesaary because we really didn't need them...and with jordi he did'nt get to play (though when he did i think he played well) and though veron has played he's not greatly impressed....

i think it's just as big of a mistake to spend big unncessarily than to spend big and have that person disapoint....

frustrating player eh? i used to think mikky because he's the one who's moaned most and cribbed and crowed wanting to play a position he was frankly shite at. he's the only one i've read his comments and felt slightly offended by his attitude. maybe our onetime russian express train as well here. but now mikky has come on alot and even changed his choon it seems, and . what time frame are we talking? Jaap Stam for the embarassment of what went on and how our club treated an apparently good and loyal man? Edward for his offensive woollen polo-neck sweaters? The ABUs will tell you Taibi i guess.
My choice would be Dwight Yorke. I know, I know, his goals but i couldnt give a big fat fecking denis law's ass. this guy made himself and us along with him look like great big swinging dicks. chelsea should have bought him instead.
thats my onion, and i'm sticking to it, so before the barrage of abuse, "stick it up yer bollix" <img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" /> :D

In terms of ill-thought through transfers it has to be Jordi and poborsky.
Jordi was bought because of his surname and media hype and poborsky was bought because of one outstanding performance against Italy in Euro '96 when he ran Maldini ragged.
Veron has turned into a mediocre deal. On paper it looked great. One of the best midfielders in the world, being brought in to strengthen on of the best midfields in the world. Sounded like a great move, and may still turn out to be.

Fat Ralph Milne, from Bristol City. Does anyone remember him, I have a couple of friends who are Bristol City fans and they still laugh about that. Utd offering £150,000 for a player that couldn't last 45 minutes let alone a full match

i remember when we didn't land Alan Shearer after Euro 96 and then i read in the papers a few days later that SAF (or AF as he was back then) had signed somebody called Ole Gunnar Solskjaer!? i was still reeling from Shearer's Newcastle move and i admit to thinking "What was he smoking? i can't even pronounce this fecker's name! bound to be shit!"

p.s. :o love ya Ole xxx

Two words... Mark Fcukin Bosnich (yes I know that's 3 but the 2nd word is totally called for)

Gary Birtles. He was a very good striker at Forest when they were good. We paid a big fee for him because he was a full England international. He failed to score in his first 41(?) matches.

Those were the days of one sub not the current any three from five so Birtles played full games not ten minute Diego Forlan appearances.

That transfer summed up our buying for a long time. Pay big money for a top player and watch his ability disappear. Liverpool seemed like that in the nineties while we snapped up our bargains (Ole, Eric, Schmikes etc). Now I have started worrying about their buys again. :(

I'm not worried about Livershit. Arsenal have made great buys in the last couple of years. Pires was a steal. Now they get two Brazilians for next to nothing. They got Campbell on a free even though he makes 90000 pounds a week ( It will take Campbell 6 years to earn as much as it cost SAF to get Rio. Then you have to consider Rio's wages on top of that!) So far only RVN has proven to be a great buy for United. I hope Rio will play as well as his billing as one of the top defenders in the world.

Poborsky and Cruyff were needed at the time because nobody had any idea just how talented Beckham and Scholes would turn out. Karel and Beckham were interchangeable at the outset of the 1996/97 campaign; it was only when Becks started hitting the headlines that Poborsky found himself more and more on the bench.

I agree Arse are better than the scousers at the moment. The league was between Arsenal and us for a few years. Now Liverpool could be returning as a force. Hopefully they continue their recent impressions as a top team only to fall away when it matters.

So a whole season on the right resulting in the double didn't convince you of Becks abilities? That was arguably his best full season, one when he was a footballer first and his head could still fit through doors. That Wimbledon goal destroyed his level head.

Worst Fergie buy ever has to be Ralph Milne. He had been crap in Scotland, played crap the one time I saw him at Charlton, slipped down the divisions... and we snapped him up... god alone knows what we were thinking.

Worst buy in my time as a fan goes to Jovanovic - a late Sexton signing, and the worst centre half ever to grace OT (and yes, I'm including Prunier!).

Leave Becks alone! The man is not bigheaded - you just have to consider how he treats the fans to see that he is essentially level-headed. He is also a fantastic TEAM player and no public or private statement or action has ever proved otherwise.

I think he is a little bit of a victim of the whole pop/fashion/luverly people scene, however, but that has come about by having a partner whose life is centred in that lifestyle. And yes, it is a little insincere of Becks to ask the media if there are any questions about his hair as it seems rather obvious he likes milking the attention of such trivia and goes out of his way to do so.

But big-headed? No bloody way. With regard to his footballing abilities, Becks knows his worth but also knows he doesn`t have to brag about it. He also knows that past glories don`t make future ones.

As for mistake buys, sorry but I think Diego is going to be up there with the `They came and they didn`t make any mark at Old Trafford, except a mediocre one.` I hope not as I like Diego but can you really name one South American who has genuinely made a lasting impact on English football? No, I thought not.

You may laugh but Ossie Ardiles. He still tslked, he played in an average spurs team and took them to the FA cup in 1981

Don't agree with the comments re Jordi - I thought he was a decent purchase for the squad. Shame about the injuries and the attitude, but I used to enjoy watching him play for us.

But at least he spent most of his salary at the OT pie shop so he didn't cost that much really.

If there was another young Jordi Cruyff available at half a million I'd take my chances again. He was very talented and could play several positions. Injuries prevented him from fulfilling his fine potential.

Could have made an interesting partner for Ruud I think. Was very suited to playing off a striker and had good passing and vision.

"Tranfer Market" includes players sold. Easy. Selling Stam. The defense never got over it.

You might be right, time will tell. However, I suspect we sold Stam because of his injury. If that's true then the defence would have struggled even if he stayed. I agree that he was a big loss.

How about a third genre; Anyone seriously regret Fergie's choice to let Davies and Etherington return to Peterborough when they were ours if we wanted them? A bit of youthful dynamism on the flanks is just what we need right now.

me too. he weighed in with a few crucial goals in his time too. would come in handy right now.

Selling Stam wasn't a mistake - we had his best years and sold him at the top of the market.

The defence was beginning to wobble before he was sold and Stam wasn't the man to stabilise things. The defensive situation now looks much better.

Not stuck on the bench he wouldn't. Fergie never rated him despite him always doing a job. Ole gets it easy compared to poor old Jordi. It was nice having a forward who could actually head the ball too.

Veron. An expensive way to unsettle one of the best midfields ever seen in England.

To Ever Hopeful,

Thank for the memory jog! No, I won`t laugh as now I recall Ossie and also Ricky Vila. Those two were skilful and also tough and brightened up Spurs for the time they were there.

Good point and it shows that South Americans can be successful in England. However, I maintain Diego is going to be right down there with Poborsky as the great never was meant to be.

There is a lot of talk about Diego getting into good positions etc on the pitch. But the fact is -he is being employed to hit the target and I reckon I have more chance of scoring a goal for Manchester United than he has. And I live in Japan!

We havent had value out of Veron or Forlan YET. Here's hoping that they put that right.

All time dodgy signings:

Birtles
Alan Brazil
Danny Wallace
Viv Anderson
Poborsky
Ashley Grimes
Taibi

:(

Oh yeah then there's that French geezer from Leeds. What did he ever do for us. Eric something or other. £1m down the drain that was.

:D

Anderson is a bit harsh. Just a couple of hundred grand for an England international who never let us down... you can hardly blame him for his injury problems which (unlike some untouchables) were not self inflicted.

Did we actually buy Grimes? I must admit I thought he was home grown. How much did we pay for him?
