So when Conte was available, the narrative was that he'd fall out and disagree with the board and the board didn't want to cave into each of his demands. The view was that conte is too harsh and always tries to get his way regardless of anything. This was a huge no no at the time due to incompatibility.

We decided to hire Rangnick. Rangnick has been the manager during a time where we have restructured the club, sacked scouts, sacked senior members of staff, gotten rid of backroom staff, are about the undergo the biggest transformation of the last years. Rangnick has shifted on the players and exposed the club in each press conference.

We are now going to hire a manager who is unproven in the Premier league because Rangnick was extremely firm, the board is caving into almost all of his demands, and he has been very strict with the board.

So what gives? What changed? If we were gonna back the manager so much and hire an unproven manager, why didn't we just hire the proven Conte?

Unless I am missing something, what has actually been happening behind the scenes for this change of mind?

I got the impression we wanted Pochettino or Ten Hag, so needed somebody willing to take the job for 6 months. Conte might have been better immediately but Im hopeful that waiting for Ten Hag and allowing this 6 months to blatantly expose those not good enough will be better in long run. Masking all the inadequacies by squeezing into 4th wouldnt have achieved anything other than short term target

I think they were just trying to find any reason not to sack Ole.

This is it.

It's what we need.

A complete reset.

Its gonna take 3 years at least. Its gonna be a long ride kids, bring snacks.

An acceptance that they have fecked up every decision the past however long so they need to defer judgement a bit. Also genuinely not wanting Conte and feeling he was the wrong choice, so being OK with writing off the season and waiting for Ten Hag as he was clearly the guy who they felt was the right guy to rebuild the club in a different direction.

Going hard for Pochettino would've been a "classic United" move over the past decade. Waiting for Ten Hag is a very clear difference, as it's finally trying to go the Pep/Klopp route in terms of building the style of play and ignoring bullshit phrases which don't mean anything like "Premier League Proven", and focusing on the team development and playing style that the coach has implemented.

You’d hope because someone at the top has identified a long term style of football that they want to play and decided it wouldn’t be Conte’s. Probably giving them too much credit though.

Conte wasn’t the answer and isn’t the answer now either

Don't believe it 'till you see it.

I roughly share your view. Our board is too dumb to figure stuff out, so just hand the keys to the kingdom to a proven guy like Conte.

my guess - eth is 10x more suitable for us than conte. the club were happy to wait til end of season for eth. obviously conte wouldn't agree to that.

Woodward is gone. Decisions are being made by people who understand Football and have a different perspective.

There's been a lot of changes throughout all levels of the club over the last 12 months or so, so the hope is that the new people in those positions are going to be significantly better. The signs are better than they have been at any other point during the last decade, but obviously it's too early to say for sure. Hell, they could improve things significantly and still not be good enough, which is an indication of how bad the previous mob were.
