The counter thread to the meaningless one.

Goals that win finals, tense matches, last minute winners, etc.

I posit one from a final being Van Basten's against the USSR

And then one from a match where the goal meant the difference between CL qualification and not, Rivaldo against Valencia.

Quite often the important goals aren't actually that good objectively good (think our two against Bayern in '99) but let's see some pearlers.

Van Persie’s final goal of his hat trick in the title winning game against Villa.

Title winning goal. Can't beat that.

Some great ones mentioned already but I’m always fond of this. Started the season poorly and this winner helped kick us off to go onto the PL and CL double.

Only judging Cups, and going purely on importance & technical skill:

CL - Zidane vs Leverkusen
WC - Maradonna vs England
FA - Gerrard vs West Ham

Not to get too into the different permutations of this premise, but what's the best important goal from a team that didn't go on to win that game? The psychology of finals and other big occasions tends to have it that if you score a cracker you're obviously winning, but are there any great consolation goals in finals?

I dare not post it. But Robben's goal against you guys was a work of beauty.

Mandzukic scored a cracking equaliser in the CL final 2017.

Messi's original Maradonesque goal against Getafe actually came in a CDR semi-final, which Barcelona subsequently lost on aggregate. (I think the scores were 5-2 and 4-0; Messi wasn't available for the second leg.)

Mario Mandzukic scored this goal against Juventus in the 2017 CL final.

Technically maybe not quite what you're asking for, but I remember De Rossi's consolation goal when you beat Roma 7-1 being fairly tidy, taken on its own.

There's a couple of other examples I can think of. I'm really not sure there's any causal link here, beyond goals being relatively rare, and meaningful goals being more memorable.

You mean that corner kick that he takes volley into the lower far corner? That truly was a thing to behold.

Doesn't get much better than this, and yes I was there :D

Giggs versus arsenal has to be among the very best. While CL finals and a world cup quarter are bigger occasions, the context of that goal places it as historic for United, in one of the greatest games of all time in the cup. It was a ridiculous goal and moment, down to 10 against our biggest rivals, with the treble on the line.

Grosso's semi final goal versus Germany in 2006 was special

Important being the caveat then surely must mean the side would go on to win the whole thing so no robben against us for example.

gotta be Van Basten's for me

I wonder what the xG was on that? Probably less than 1 in a 100 is going in there

Can't remember i, but assume it's an identical goal to all his other goals?
Cut in from right and place it in the left corner?

I think he means this one:
Robben versus us in 2010

Deserves a new thread:

'Most ruined goal by stupid celebration'

I know our fans gave him some unwarranted abuse for his joining Chelsea, myself included, and he was giving some back, but it really is an absolutely terrible celebration.

Reminds me of the wife, who hates football, saying 'of course he went for another job for more money' as I attempted to justify telling the television to f off.

Messi actually has a thing of doing some of his best goals in semis, finals or crucial matches...like the header in the 09 final, the slalom against Madrid in semis, the Boateng one in Semis, the free kick against Liverpool, the slalom against Bilbao in Copa del rey, the chip against Mexico in Copa's semis...even the not that important in terms of instanvce but clutch in terms of classifying or not next round against Nigeria in 18. Those are some of his very best ones in terms of aesthetics and complexity.
