What makes a good fan?

What is it that separates a better supporter from the others?

Is it in the solid and life-long dedication of only supporting one club- over many, many years?

Is it in the faith and the belief in never, ever to say anything negative or sceptical about the club, the board, the manager, the players or its' fans?

Is it in the total amount of hours and money spent on tickets and souvenirs?

Is it in the passion and devotion loaded in the hatred towards other rival clubs, and their fans, or towards others that is deemed as unworthy fans?

What is a good fan to you?

A good fan to me is one that supports just one club to the exclusion of others. Thats it.

I don't see someone who goes to all the games both home and away, wears shirts and sleeps on a Beckham bedspread any more a fan than someone who lives in the USA and doesn't get to go to the games.

It is a bit of a pointless question. There is nothing that makes someone a "good" supporter. If defeat hurts you've made it...

The other side of the coin is much more relevant. There are a thousand and one ways to be a bad fan - not least by swapping clubs or defining support as shouting down anyone or anything that is critical.

This came up when I first started posting here. Someone made a big deal about who the "real fans" are. A fan is one who supports one team over another. Now I root for the MLS team in my town and occasionally go to a match. I support United though very faithfully. I go to see the MLS team play because I don't have the advantage of seeing Premire League football except on PPV and sometimes one needs a fix. Losing hurts like a bitch, but you know what? Victory is sweet and a fan supports them no matter what. Hell I have been a Cubs baseball fan my whole freakin life ( 30+ years) and a Bears fan. I have seen the best and worse of times with both teams, but I still support and root for them no matter what.

I don't go to games so I am reluctant to call myself a fan.

I watch all United games that are shown live on television. I get the results of other United games as soon as possible on radio or, nowadays, by following on the internet. Time differences can make this difficult. Saturday 3pm England is 2am Sunday or midnight depending on daylight saving. I have Sky and they have the rights to the prem so at least I can watch these games at home. ESPN have the Champions League. Sky now have ESPN but I used to have to get up at 3am and go to the pub for Euro games, then go to work.

I wear United shirts, official or otherwise, on non-work days. I keep up with news on the internet etc (pretty boring for the past week or so - no United games and no transfer speculation). I spend hours thinking about United.

However, I am now the type of 'fan' I was contemptuous of when I went home and away in the seventies. Real fans put going to games before everything else. They certainly don't leave the country.

Strangely enough defeat still hurts just as much.

Time difference does make it difficult for me as well. Unless I am willing to shell out $269 ( spread out over four months) for Premire League Pass on my dish ( and I just might be willing.) I have to figure out when the matches are on so I can listen on the internet. On game days I wear my shirt and get weird looks from people who don't know who the hell Giggs is. (love that! :p ) There are rabid fans here in the US, we call them Notre Dame fans (I do that is.) because the ND fans I know put going to a game before all else and I agree Dicko, I hate that. There is more to life. I try to listen to all the matches I can but if I can't well I can't. I don't stop living because of it. ;)

That's a shame. I go to the games I can, I listen, watch or by any means possible keep up-to-date with all th others. I don't see myself a better or worse fan than any other on here.

Like 2B said; A good fan to me is one that supports just one club to the exclusion of others. Thats it.

A Red is a Red, and all Red's are equal.

Costwise we are lucky here. In the normal Fox package we get a Saturday 3 oclock game, two Sunday games and the Monday night game as well as early kick offs like Sheep vs Scouse this weekend. Most weeks it's 4 or 5 games so usually United are on.

The time factor is a killer though. From late October its Sunday 2am, Monday 1am and 3am and Tuesday 6.30am. Luckily I work flexible hours but still have a lot of sickies on Mondays.

I suppose a population of 18 million and the time differences mean Murdoch leaves me off his money grab list.

Anyone who has not been to a game this season and knows they will make no effort to do so has a huge credibility gap. I include myself in that category. If I started to argue about how I was as good a fan as a regular matchgoer I would be laughed out of town - and rightly so.

A good fan is one who supports their team however possible (even if they can only listen to them on the radio) and stick by them thru think and fine.

To me a Good Fan is someone who knows his stuff, not a one day wonder who knowledge does not expand past 1994.

I could count on 1 hand how many people I would rate as good Fans on this site. The vast majority would not be here if we had not won silverware in the 1990's.

What if your too young to remember that early, but make every effort to gain knowledge about the history of this great club.

unless you were red in the 70' & 80' you probably don't hate the scousers enough to qualify as a good fan.
;)

That would be Fine. I would apreciate that sort of thing.

Now tell me where did Man Utd finish in the 1980-1981 Season, who knocked them out of the FA cup, who was sacked as the manager and what club did we get the new manager from??

Exactly, drawing an arbitrary line in the sand saying "this is what a real fan is" is for ignorant nobends with nothing better to do than judge others.

That test wasn't for you. I don't think you even thought we had a club in 1981.

Thats ok then, here's me thinking there was a tit handing out tests to see who is a real fan. Must of been someone else.</strong><hr></blockquote>

Its okay, I would understand a wanker for making that mistake.

Sounds a bit more like an anorak Baz.
So who on the cafe would you class in your ''vast majority"?

who are you to judge???

I've been a fan for over 30 years, followed United Home and away,(when i can) for that period of time. Is someone who has never seen the team play a better fan than me?

Needs to work during a power cut as well...we had these in the 70's, and as per the other posts, just going back to 1992 don't make the deal.

a fan is basically a person that doesnt give up in the team. winning or loosing.

No.

I remember when we got to the Cup final in 1976. There were the usual newspaper stories about too fans and too few tickets. Some woman with a ticket said she was as big a fan as anyone and deserved her ticket. She hadn't seen United for years because of family commitments. I was pissed off because I didn't have a ticket and only missed in the three previous seasons due to circumstances beyond my control (Millwall away, hitched - arrived late, Norwich League Cup SF away arrested, Stoke away post relegation - didn't know the game was on a Monday :o ). I deserved a ticket more than her because I was a bigger fan. I paid ten times face value outside the ground, nothing could stop me going.

Now things are different. I still care about the club but I don't go to games so others deserve tickets more than me. And if they deserve tickets more than I do, they are better fans.
