....Ruud had got injured tonight.

A few weeks ago everyone was going on about how much we need Ruud.

On Saturday, he didn't play well, and didn't look especially fit.

Well I know you need to play games to be fit - but with OGS playing well on Saturday, and Forlan having found scored a couple recently - why the hell did we risk Ruud tonight, in a game where the opposition was less than great, and the result more or less academic.

If he'd torn a hamstring or broken his leg, we'd be buggered.

It was important to get the result, and no other forward plays as well in the 4-5-1, they're not suited to it. He needs games to get back from the injury he's just had!

I reckon we'd have got the result anyway, and could have given Ole the game he deserved, and Forlan a full 90 minutes which he also deserved.

I don't think it was worth risking Ruud.

Should we have played Rio and Beckham, who both got injured? Injuries are a fact of football, you can't avoid them, just hope for the best.

Fair points - but if Ruud had got injured and been out for another month or so, the opinions would be different.

I agree that Ruud need a run of games to get himself fit.

Besides that, injury can come at every moments and sometimes it's very hard to prevent it. That's why we need 4 quality strikers.

to inspire confidence IMO.. and he did just that.

Ole and Forlan have not inspired confidence lately and Ruud is always the one the fans believe in the most that will score..

he brought his tally into 2 digits last night and that's amazing considering his injury and our own form.

Oh for fecks sake that is total bollocks.

Ole played well on Saturday which most people seem to recognise, and Diego has just started scoring.

3 Staturdays.

Forlan scores a great header
Forlan scores a gol of the season contender
Olle scores a decent goal against city

What more can you ask from any of them?

Dead right Murt. And don't forget the equaliser against Fulham.

People phoned in to MUTV last night complaining that Ole didn't start because of his performance on Saturday.

I only hope Fergie told him it was tactics and not down to his performance otherwise the poor little sod will really start to wonder why he bothers.

And Forlan has scored two important goals for us that was equivalent to four points.

Ruud needed the game for his own confidence, to get the hamstring injury out of his mind, it worked. He got better as the game went on, scored a decent goal, linked the play up well. I'd back him to get a few more goals v the Hammers at the weekend.

Must say its tough on Ole, he played well against City....

He should start against West Ham, which will be an important game, unlike the Leverkusen one.

That's true - I wouldn't not have played Ruud. But the confidence of other players is equally important.

I'm sure Ole was left out because of his performance v Siddy, he was only bettered by Scholesy on a very bad day. It's the Nevilles & Fab who got dropped. I think Gaz will be back at the weekend but Phil might remain sidelined as Quentin had a decent enough game last night and didn't drop any clangers.

.. before you start, it's a typo, I meant "wasn't" left out! <img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" />

Haven't you mastered the edit option or just trying to get your post count up? ;)

It was a nothing match yesterday and it really pissed me off when I found out two players were injured. I can't believe that we played some of our main players, it should have been a match where reserves and youth got the chance but then when the team list came out, it had Beckham, Ferdinand, van Nistelrooy, Giggs, Scholes, Veron all playing. It didn't matter if we topped the group or not, we had already qualified and Leverkusen were playing a reserve side aswell. Totally pointless!

I would have to totally disagree with you. After the debacle on Saturday, yesterday's match became extremely important. It was essential that some of our top players put in a good performance and prove to themselves as well as the fans that they could play well, and it was also crucial psychologically that we won and didn't relinquish the top spot. Have you forgotten how demoralising that defeat against Maccabi Haifa was and the criticism United got for fieiding a weak side when the top standings weren't even decided?

Yesterday was our chance to redeem ourselves in some part and I would say we succeded. The injuries were unfortunate but they are all a part of football. A good manager picks his team according to their ability to win games not according to their propensity for getting injured.
