What ever happened to loans?

Forgive me as I am speaking way out of my comfort zone, but why not go for loans in January? We could land upon the next Larsson. And if it turns out to be Wout, then it was never a huge commitment anyway (like a certain Antony). It’s like a paid-for low-risk trial where there is potential mutual benefit.

Am I missing something in regards to why we’re not exploring that more?

I don’t understand it. We are short on cash and trying to figure out a new system. And we are horrible in the transfer market! Loans make so much more sense for us just now.

I raised the same point in another thread. I am sure there are few top teams where there attackers are unhappy and not getting any minutes, we should be making proper use of loan market. Reguilon, Larrson, Sabitzer were all okayish for us, Ighalo and Weghorst less so, however we need bodies now, i heard Madrid are open to loaning Endrick, we should be all over that, plus Guler at Madrid is also not getting much game time. With Antony gone, Garnacho and Rashford up for sale, we need atleast two ins otherwise we would be very short on numbers and with Europa league and Fa cup there, there are still plenty of matches.

Endrick and Guler would be good

Given we have no money, I assume our management team has been considering virtually nothing but loans.

Its the absolute pragmatic way to deal with this window. Feelings have to be set aside for some years.

I find it strange we arent all over the Vlahovic loan (far from perfect, but the best option at the moment) and the Pogba idea (top player, nonetheless).

Also, the only season Felix played really well was in this type of system, working behind the striker, and strolling wide at will. He is so out of favor, it would be a easy and productive loan, even with some fee.

Zinchenko on loan from Arsenal for LWB?

Rashford on loan to Arsenal with Saka and Jesus injured?

Loans are often deceptively expensive. You might end up paying high wages and even a loan fee for a player who is usually only available for a loan, because something is wrong with him. At least when it’s not about youngsters, but established players. So there’s a rather high risk that the loan doesn’t work out, while the costs are high and there might not even be a perspective of keeping the player for the long run if it should work out.

Interesting. Do you recall if Weghort or Reguillon ended up being costly? My thinking is that it would be less costly long term considering our poor results with transfers lately. Not like we have top 4 to challenge but we need to stay away from relegation zone but also have depth for FA cup and EL. Potential trophy/trophies would seem justified in my opinion, and then we scout proper transfers in the summer. Assuming we can make a sale or two this month of course.

There were additional costs to the Weghorst loan, as Burnley had to break off the existing season long loan to Besiktas with Besiktas getting a cut of the (now inflated) £3m loan fee. With wages on top.

A wing back loan would be really useful and probably easier to find than a lot of positions. I can’t really see us getting quality in any other positions without paying stupid money.

Who are these available players on loan that would help us? Most players available for loan are either youngsters or failed players at other clubs. Not really much value in that market to improve us.

I don’t know really, I get my transfer news from others here. Just wanted to pose the question to see if anyone had any insight. My intention is also to see us with more depth for sake of rotation and fitness so we can at least play with more energy in the cup competitions when tactical application becomes nonexistent.

No idea really. But I know that our loans for Coutinho and Perisic were extremely expensive back then. I think many teams ask for the full salary and the book value the player has for the time of the loan. At least I think that was the case when we loaned Coutinho.
And I forgot one of the most obvious risks associated with loans: new players usually need time before they really settle into a new team. So you might end up building a players form and once he hits it again, he's gone.

I'm not trying to say loans are a bad thing or anything like that. But they can be more complicated and expensive than expected.

If there are good loan options for us in the wingback and forward positions, that will work with Amorim's system, we should be in for them. It's painfully obvious to everyone with eyes that our current options aren't good enough and can't (or won't) work in Amorim's system. We need players now, even if the loans cost a bit more. Our xG against Fulham was 0.25 and we had only a single shot on target, our goal, which wouldn't have gone in but for a deflection. Against Rangers we relied on a Butland howler to get our win. This season is just littered with examples of how poor we are. We're not creating enough chances and we're not scoring enough goals. If we're going to back the manager, he needs to be given resources. If we can't buy due to FFP, then we ought to be in the market for any loan options for players who can fit the system, improve our league position and give us squad depth for the cup competitions.

Clubs get around £3.1 million in prize money per place in the league. With a couple extra players we could arguably finish 3 or 4 places higher than we're currently likely to.

Wonder if PSG would let Desire Doue or Barcola (less so) go on loan as they now have Kvara starting LW. Doue would be great in one of the 10s and is quite versatile.
