Most will say it's a bit of both. You need the skills you are naturally born with along with hard work. But I ask, why is Brooklyn Beckham not a top footballer then?

His daddy is david, one of the best crossers of the ball I've seen. He has the genetics. He obviously must have had the best coaching ever to go with it. So why? I'm using him as an example. What did he lack?

He probably did not work even half as hard as David did when he was a child. Plus he also has 50% of Victoria's genes.

Oh yeah you need a high level of both to be a top professional Footballer.

David, by his own admission, wasn't the most talented player but he worked really hard during training, after training to hone his craft.

Also you need luck with injuries & being picked in the right schools early on, plus parents willing to invest a large amount of their time in you.

Anyone could be a professional footballer as long as they weren't at a clear genetic disadvantage.

Talent is overrated, and it's a box for the factors we can't quantify yet. Whatever we can't define or place our fingers on is thrown into the talent box.

The best have an insane work ethic and have spent tens of thousands of hours honing their craft.

Brooklyn Beckham received a Mercedes as a gift for getting his driving licence, he has lived a life of luxury his entire life.
Being a pro footballer requires a lot of hard work and grafting, not to mention attitude and determination. So no, none of the Beckham kids will make it as pro footballers.

This.

You need to be an above average to an elite to have a good chance of making it. You also need to put in a shit load of hard work to improve the technical part of your game. And then a bit of luck to avoid injuries, get noticed at the right time by the right club who have the right position opening up in their ranks for you.

Extremely few kids of top level professional footballers turn out to be top level footballer themselves so it can't be as simple as having the right genes.

A lot of top players used to eat breathe and shit football from a very young age, a lot of the time because it's all they've had. It's very different from the kind of coaching Brooklyn received, also being spoiled and likely babied throughout. Look at the American system, very structured, but they've yet to produce 1 top talent in decades. To get to the top it takes a combination of environment, attitude and natural talent.

It's all hard work. Nobody is born smart or talented. You have to learn and work at it.

Hard work, some talent and easily as important a lot of luck.

only one that easily comes to mind is Blind, do the Maldini's count?
Yeah Blind and Veron! But that's the thing Veron had the right attitude. He wanted to prove he can be "normal" so found himself a job as cleaner or something and had to wake up early for that.

There must be a couple of more, surely?

Brooklyn inherited his mum's talent gene so the poor kid never had a chance!

Skills arent something a player is naturally born with. Its one of the great sporting myths.

You've never studied genetics, have you?

Genetics, environment, confidence, hunger and opportunity I would say.

As for Brooklyn Beckham, he is quite a decent player (was in Arsenal's academy and crosses the ball just like Becks) by all accounts but it is hard to imagine him having the hunger of his father. That drive is the key thing IMO. It is why a guy like Gary Neville achieved so much in the game.

There are loads of top players that had a father or other close relative that were good players, Forlan, Mata and Pique spring to mind.
