Follow up from East is East

Just watched it tonight. To really understand the film you'd have to know both the Asian and British cultures well. The deep Manc/Yorkshire accents on young Asian actors was hilarious.

Well worth a watch
 
East is East is a funny film for everyone, but maybe more poignant for people with experience of northern english/asian cultrure, as you say. It's hard enough for 'mixed marriages' now, but it must have been bloody difficult in the 60s. Love will find a way, as they say.

And a word for Kipling, whether he was a child of his times or not, he's one hell of a writer.

The storyline in East is East was something I experienced and saw first hand when I came over to the UK as a child. Similar to a lesser extent in the new film where the roles have reversed. Sending money to extended families for house building and acquisition of land is quite common and the young adults being at crossroads between the two cultures is pretty spot on...
