GUUS HIDDINK has sparked the first transfer war of the summer by telling Roman Abramovich to steal Wesley Sneijder from under the noses of Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson wants Holland midfielder Sneijder as the ideal replacement for Paul Scholes – he even made an approach last summer but was turned down – while neighbours Manchester City are also considering a bid.

But Hiddink, whose advisers are planning talks with Chelsea and the Turkish FA in a bid to gain his release from the last year of his contract over there, has told Chelsea that World Cup star Sneijder, 26, is the man to revitalise them. The player, who is keen on a move to England, is valued at about £30million by Inter. That will not deter any of the three clubs who want him, but Hiddink hopes his influence on his fellow Dutchman can swing the balance.

A major stumbling block has been his £175,000-a-week wages, which make him the best-paid player in Italy.

Chelsea scheduled to discuss Wesley Sneijder transfer with Inter Milan | Metro.co.uk

The Blues are understood to be ready to table a £30million offer for the Dutchman, and reports in Italy suggest Sneijder and his wife would prefer a move to London rather than Manchester.

With Guus Hiddink almost certain to arrive at Stamford Bridge in some capacity, the 64-year-old is believed to have given Roman Abramovich the green light to sign his fellow countryman.

Now the west Londoners will sit down with Inter chiefs, including director of football Marco Branca, in order to discuss the transfer of the man who cost the Nerazzurri £13million two-years ago.

The former Real Madrid playmaker was strongly mooted as a replacement for Paul Scholes at Old Trafford, and now that Chelsea have made their move, Sir Alex Ferguson could be forced into launching a counter bid in the next few days.

Wesley Sneijder pledges future to Inter Milan

Wesley Sneijder has moved to end speculation over his future by insisting he wants to stay with current club Inter Milan.

The 27-year-old playmaker has been mooted as a target for Chelsea and Manchester United but is set to remain at the San Siro.

"Milan is marvellous, picturesque and full of elegance. I love it," Sneijder told the Inter website.

"At the moment I am very happy here and I don't see why I should leave."

The Holland international joined Inter in the summer of 2009 and played a major part in helping Inter win the Treble of the Champions League, Serie A and Coppa Italia in his first season.

The Italian club finished second in the league and got to the last eight of the Champions League during the last campaign, with their only trophy coming when they beat Palermo to win the Coppa Italia.

Sneijder, who scored four goals in 25 outings in a season hampered by injury, has a contract running until 2015 with Inter and his commitment to the club will disappoint potential suitors.

"There is a family atmosphere at Inter and there are all the ingredients to aim high," added Sneijder.

Nani could be sweetner in Sneijder transfer

Nani could be sacrificed by Manchester United to enable them to land top summer transfer target Wesley Sneijder.

Although Sneijder has indicated he is happy at Inter Milan , Sir Alex Ferguson has not given up hope of signing the £35million-rated Holland World Cup star.

And Nani, who will be forced even further down the midfield pecking order at United with the £16m arrival of Ashley Young next week, could be offered to Inter as bait to land Sneijder.

Nani enjoyed his best season at United last term. His nine goals and 18 assists in the Premier League were capped by his team-mates selecting him as their Player of the Year.

However, the 24-year-old is said to be open-minded about the prospect of leaving Old Trafford this summer after losing his place to Antonio Valencia towards the end of the season.

Valencia's successful return from a six-month lay-off with a broken ankle came at the expense of Nani, who only made the bench for the the 3-1 Champions League final defeat to Barcelona.

The arrival of Aston Villa and England midfielder Young, who can operate on either flank and through the middle as a second striker, will pile further pressure on the Portugal international to keep his place.

Ferguson will have an abundance of wide players in Young, Valencia, Ji-Sung Park, Nani and Tom Cleverley, who has returned from a loan spell at Wigan, while Ryan Giggs can still operate out there if required.

If United can also pull off a major coup by signing Samir Nasri from Arsenal - with intermediaries from both camps having met to discuss a potential deal -Nani would be the most likely player to exit Old Trafford.

Although Sneijder's £175,000-a-week wage demands and Inter's asking price could ultimately scupper any deal, United are said to be exploring every possibility - which could include Nani going the other way in part exchange.

CHELSEA’S £33M WESLEY SNEIJDER TAG

INTER MILAN have told Chelsea they want £33 million for Wesley Sneijder.

Inter are holding out for a massive fee for Dutch midfielder Sneijder, but have hinted a deal involving cash plus either Michael Essien or Florent Malouda might clinch a move.

Chelsea face competition from both Manchester clubs. Guus Hiddink, expected to be named as Chelsea’s new manager next week when a settlement deal with the Turkish Football Federation is thrashed out, has singled out Sneijder as one of the key players he wants.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is still reluctant to meet Inter’s massive price for the 26-year-old – and even more of an obstacle is Sneijder’s massive £175,000 a week wages.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s hopes of landing Brazilian whizzkid Neymar have taken a knock. They have already had one offer for 19-year-old Neymar turned down and Real Madrid have moved in for the Santos player.

Chelsea are hoping to conclude two deals this weekend. Talks with Anderlecht’s 18-year-old striker Romelu Lukaku in Monaco are near completion, and an £18m deal is expected to be clinched today.

A £9m deal for Racing Genk winger Kevin de Bruyne is also close, but the 19-year-old Belgium international is to be loaned back to his parent club for a year before moving to England.

Manchester UNITED’S spending frenzy is set to accelerate with a final tilt for £35million Wesley Sneijder – amid growing speculation that they are on the brink of a fresh take over attempt from Qatar.

Football’s grapevine is buzzing with rumours that Qatar Holdings, the business arm of the country’s ruling royal family, are the real force behind a United cash spree that is set to top £125MILLION.

That kind of transfer market spending is reckoned to be way beyond the Glazer family who bought the club for nearly £800m in 2005.

Qatar Holdings, a division of the Qatar Investment Authority, which identifies ways to maximise the Arab state’s oil fortune, are believed to have had a £1.5billion offer turned down last year.

But it has been suggested in business circles that a third party – thought to be the Qataris – may have funded a £250m loan repayment by the American-based Glazers late last year.

That arrangement, if accurate, is thought to be a forerunner to a full takeover bid, with sources close to the Glazers saying they now value the 12-time Premier League champions closer to a staggering TWO BILLION POUNDS.

And Sir Alex Ferguson’s eye-watering transfer splash has done nothing to dampen speculation that Qatar Holdings – backed by the emir, Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani – are back on the scene again.

Although on holiday in the south of France, the United boss is close to *sealing deals for £21.3m Ashley Young from Aston Villa, teenage Blackburn defender Phil Jones for up to £20m and Atletico Madrid keeper David de Gea for £25m.

Ferguson also has £25m Alexis Sanchez of Udinese in his sights and is determined to land a top midfielder to replace Paul Scholes – with Sneijder his No.1 choice.

Despite claims on Inter Milan’s website last week that he is happy in Italy and sees no reason to move, United believe 27-year-old Sneijder DOES fancy a fresh challenge at Old Trafford.

They should discover this week if a deal is possible. If not, Arsenal star Sami Nasri – with a year left on his contract – and Tottenham’s Croatia playmaker Luka Modric will become active targets.

But it is the sudden release of a huge transfer war chest which has sparked rumours of a bigger picture developing at Old Trafford.

The Glazer family continue to insist United are NOT for sale – and that being unpopular with the fans doesn’t bother them.

But they cannot compete with the spending power of Abu-Dhabi owned Manchester City or Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea, who forked out £75m in January on Fernando Torres and David Luiz. Officials from Qatar Holdings were at Wembley a fortnight ago, sitting close to the Glazer family and senior United figures during the Champions League final against Barcelona.

The Qatar royal family – under the guise of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community – are Barcelona’s shirt sponsors after penning a massive £135m deal to become the Catalan club’s first paid shirt advertisers in the club’s 111-year history.

It is unclear whether any talks took place while the two parties were in London, but Qatar have made no secret of their interest in United as they look to bolster their sporting armoury ahead of the controversial 2022 World Cup.

Sneijder: 'I don't know if I'll stay

Wesley Sneijder has given fans a scare amid links to Chelsea and Manchester United. “I love Inter with all my heart, but I don’t know if I’ll stay.

The Dutch playmaker has been hitting headlines over the past few weeks with the two Premier League sides battling for his signature.

Up until now, Sneijder had rejected all talk of leaving San Siro, but from his vacation in Los Angeles an interview with the Gazzetta dello Sport could cause shockwaves.

The Inter fans have always treated me very well. They were wonderful and I want to simply thank them,” he said when asked if he could tell the supporters he’d stay.

Then, only God will decide where my future lies. I can be certain of one thing: if I remain at Inter, then I will give my all to win everything again.”

Between Rafa Benitez and Leonardo, the club won the Club World Cup, Italian Super Cup and Coppa Italia this season, though it paled in comparison with the Treble.

When you have had the greatest and most surprising year of your life, it’s only natural that the next will be less rewarding. Not everything can be perfect.

Having said that, I had fun in my second year with Inter and was satisfied, even if we didn’t win everything. At least this way we still have a few more objectives to reach.

“I love Inter with all my heart.

I realise that this has been posted but I'm bumping this thread in the hope that people might actually use it. The other thread is a trainwreck.

Sir Alex Ferguson has denied any interest in Wesley Sneijder amid reports of a £35m deal being close.

The Manchester United manager has been reading English press reports that the Dutchman has agreed terms with the Old Trafford club, but Ferguson claims there is no truth in the rumours.

"I keep reading about this, there's absolutely nothing at all to that [reports of United's interest in the player]," he told ESPN Soccernet Press Pass. "First of all I don't think Inter are prepared to sell him anyway.

"You get conjecture and you get speculation every week in newspapers unfortunately. And we have to answer these for some reason - why, I don't know, but we have to find a reason without adding insult to any particular club, or embarrassing any particular player. There's nothing we can do about it."

Reports had suggested that United chief executive David Gill has been in Milan thrashing out a deal with club and player, but United have since confirmed that Gill was heading to Zurich for a European Club Association meeting.

Inter have insisted that Sneijder is not for sale but rumours persist that the Italian club are desperate to sell to fund a move for Javier Pastore.

Manchester United are close to completing Wesley Sneijder's £35million transfer.

United chief executive David Gill is believed to have agreed terms with representatives of the Inter Milan and Holland star, who will earn £190,000-a-week at Old Trafford.

Sneijder was forced to compromise on his initial wage demands of £250,000-a-week, but an agreement has been struck and the move is close to completion.

United owners the Glazers have sanctioned the £35m fee for the 27-year-old World Cup star as a replacement for Paul Scholes, who retired at the end of last season.

Chief executive David Gill met his counterparts at Inter in Zurich yesterday, at a scheduled meeting of the European Club Association.

It is understood Gill made clear United's willingness to pay £35m for Sneijder, with an official bid expected to be lodged within the next 48 hours.

Although Inter appeared reluctant to sell, they have accepted they cannot turn down such a lucrative bid and are ready to accept United's offer.

The capture of Sneijder will take United's summer spending to £85m, following the combined £50m outlay on Ashley Young, David De Gea and Phil Jones.

Gill was hopeful of concluding the Sneijder deal before he flies out to the US tomorrow to join up with the United squad on their pre-season tour.

Sir Alex Ferguson's significant transfer spending is proof of his desire to keep United ahead of the pack next term, and maintain their success on the back of last season's title triumph.

"Absolutely, that's what we are always trying to achive," said Fergie.

"The great thing about United, and what I try to achieve, is to have a foundation. And the foundation is strong in Manchester United, very strong.

"Our youth coaches are very good, and the Academy, excellent coaches we have there and given the regulations they work under they do a great job.

"It's always been a part of the club to bring young players through from the youth team.

"I was going to bring Paul Pogba along, to be honest with you, but it would then mean huge numbers, you know, I think when we all meet up, finally, in New York.

"Javier Hernandez joins us there and then we'll have 29 players or something like that, which is a lot on tour, but in some way we'll have to cope."

Manchester United and Inter agree £35.2m fee for Wesley Sneijder as negotiations continue over personal terms - Goal.com

Manchester United have agreed a £35.2 million club record fee with Inter for the transfer of Wesley Sneijder, Goal.com can reveal.

But Sneijder's wage demands are currently holding up the deal from being close to completion. Sources have told Goal.com that the player's camp have indicated they want around £200,000-a-week but United are reluctant to pay more than £170,000-a-week.

Nevertheless, the Premier League champions are hoping to reach a compromise over the £30,000-a-week difference as the prospect of a switch that would smash United's transfer record grows increasingly likely.

Senior officials from the two clubs are understood to have shaken hands on the terms of the deal after United chief executive David Gill made it clear the Premier League champions are willing to meet Inter's asking price in a series of meetings in recent days.

United have confirmed that Gill was in Zurich on Wednesday, where an Inter delegation was also present, to attend a European Club Association meeting but an Inter source told Goal.com that he had been in Milan on Tuesday and early on Wednesday to lead Sneijder negotiations with another Old Trafford director.

United's focus will now turn to agreeing personal terms with the Holland international, who is regarded by the club as a natural heir to the recently retired Paul Scholes. An official bid will follow if the 19-times English champions are confident they can meet the player's demands.

It is believed that the 2011 Champions League finalists could attempt to meet the shortfall in the two parties' positions with bonus-related payments or an enhanced image rights deal

Sneijder is currently at Inter's pre-season training camp at Pinzolo in Italy. The deal will now depend on his desire to force through a move to Old Trafford, which offers him an excellent chance to add to an already impressive medal haul which includes domestic titles in Italy, Spain and the Netherlands, in addition to the 2010 Champions League.

He has a contract at San Siro that expires in 2015 and would be content to see it out if a transfer fails to materialise this summer, hence his reluctance to agitate in public for a move.

New Inter manager Gian Piero Gasperini has told the Inter hierarchy that he does not see the Holland star as indispensable as he prepares to field a new 3-4-3 formation next season.

Inter playmaker Wesley Sneijder has admitted that he wanted to join Manchester United as the Red Devils pursued him over the summer.

The 28-year-old Netherlands international said he was close to leaving the Italian club for a new life in England.

However, he believes the breakdown in talks was down to the Premier League champions stumbling before the final hurdle. His message comes just 24 hours after Sir Alex Ferguson said Sneijder was not the right man for his side.

"United? I would have liked to [join them]. It would be crazy to suggest otherwise," Sneijder was quoted as saying by the Corriere dello Sport.

"There was a moment when I was close to United, but in the end nothing happened.

"However, I am happy in Milan as the president [Massimo Moratti] did not want to sell me."

Yet despite seeing a potential big move fail, Sneijder is not feeling any side effects as he eyes an even brighter future at San Siro.

"Inter gave me a chance when the door was closed. I feel at home here and I never wanted to go.

"I don't know why my move to Manchester United never materialised, maybe they never really wanted me."

Inter travel to Palermo for the first Serie A game of the season on Sunday night, with kick-off at the Renzo Barbera at 20:45 (CET).
