We should be bottom fishing.

In the good old days we just went to top teams and bought their best players; RVP, Rooney etc. Now with costs, FFP and our slight fall from grace this isn't so easy or possible.

What I don't understand why in the last few years we haven't been bottom fishing. People will say this is just highlighting the sad state of MUFC - and is "unUnited" but - it's also a reflection on where we realistically are and our big over-seas signings haven't been a great success in the last few years.

I think we can be pretty sure that Southampton, Leicester and Ipswich are getting relegated. We should be offering Ipswich £X for Delap now, or £x- when they get relegated and get the deal signed now either for January or May. Southampton and Leicester must have some bargains coming up that would be better or equal to what we have in certain positions or be better back up.

You would get people who have played in the premier league and know what it is about, no culture shock. Yes they have been relegated but these teams would get relegated if they had Bryan Robson in their squad. Identify those who have PL quality and get a bargain from a club that is going to be desperately needing money once they are relegated.

Take Kalvin Phillips for £1 and a pay if you play contract. We need to get a bit more inventive on our recruitment.

had a long reply typed out but then realised it said fishing.

I think we are? We’re sniffing around Cunha, and Lecce is not premier league, but also a similar idea.

Delap and Dibling would be worthwhile punts. Cunha from Wolves i'd take in an instant, same for Ait-Nouri and maybe Larser? Not sure i'd take anyone from Everton.

We’re looking to spend £30m+ on Dorgu. I’m not his biggest fan but KWP is pretty much available on a free in the summer. I’m not sure Dorgu will end up much better for a much increased cost. There will be some bargains to be had but we cock our noses up at buying from relegated teams. Maguire would have been considerably cheaper if we’d picked him up from Hull, and Robertson has been a success for Liverpool. There are lots more. I don’t have a problem with picking over the bones of relegated sides.

The issue is that even clubs getting relegated these days are under little pressure to sell thanks to the PL tv rights money and parachute payments. Sure they will lose their best players but the prices won't be cheap and there are a lot more clubs with big budgets to bid against us. The real value for a long time now has been in overseas talent identification and we have been abysmal at this for the most part whereas Brighton for example have done brilliantly at it. Our recent signings of Kone and Leon suggest we might be finally learning that lesson but of course these are the types of signings that won't bear fruit straight away.

We didn't solely buy players from good teams in the good old days.

Everton finished 17th the season before we signed Rooney. We signed Alan Smith from relegated Leeds. Signed Valencia from Wigan. Van der Sar from Fulham. Roy Keane from relegated Notts Forest. Denis Irwin from Oldham. We regularly signed players from lesser leagues, like Chicharito, Solskjaer, Vidic etc.

There's plenty of talent in the bottom half of the PL. Even some in the Championship.

This just simply isn’t true. We’ve bought more players from lesser teams than top teams over the years. Even our most successful signing in the post fergie era, arguably Bruno, was from Sporting.

Which big teams have bought players from? Rvp, carrick, berbatov (if you count spurs a big team?), Pogba from Juve, Casemiro..

Mata, Mount, Matic, Sancho, Pogba, Casemiro, Varane, Di Maria, Sanchez, Mkhitaryan, Kagawa..

Our buys from big clubs are usually bad.

I’m not disagreeing with that. I’m saying we already have been buying from smaller teams through even fergie’s time. It shouldn’t matter where you buy from anyway, it’s about whether the player is right or not. And plus smaller teams ask for just as much money as big teams for their players because everyone has cash these days.

Look how much everton are asking for branthwaite or how much forest would ask for gibbs white, or wolves for Cunha

There is no bargain hunting anymore. The best way to find a bargain is to develop the best youth from around the world

Yeah I was agreeing with by finishing the list of shit buys from big clubs. It's not been our style. The talisman from smaller clubs is usually a better buy.

PL is simply too expensive. There's value in the market but that value can only be found in the Prem when a manager is looking to get rid of a player for personal reasons.
