ya we do need a naughty guy who touches the forward harder. Rio is a very disciplined guy and Wes doesnt mess around too much. We need an Italian kind of defender or even Koewn kind of guy( keown only by behaviour), we have enough back up to replace the guy if he is suspended( unlike arsenal). I think Samuel or Ayala wil be ideal. If we would have had someone like that in Madrid we could have done better by unsettling them. If Thuram can do the nasty stuff he will be ideal.

May not necessarily be the solution, although I like the idea... I think Laurent Blanc never needed to play dirty to keep a defence tight. And I believe Rio can do the same... Needs to be a little more confidence in the ability to deal with the formidable might of some of Europe's elite. We can deal with the might of England all right (which is saying quite a bit, with the likes of Henry and Owen around)... And that confidence just needs to be taken a little higher in Europe. That comes with playing a few games at that level. The last campaign will prove invaluable to this crop of defenders we have. And they will go from strength to strength from there. That's my belief.

But sorry had Blanc ever kept our defense tight? I mean he lead last seasons defense and altough it wasnt 100 % his fault he was the leader of the worst Manutd defense in a decade

You always need a tough defender in a defense

O no, I don't mean to talk of Blanc who played for us. Laurent Blanc playing for us, surely was not at his best. I mean to speak of the Laurent Blanc who helped stifle all opposition that played against Les Bleus in the 1998 World Cup. And that Laurent Blanc was the marshall of his defence. Rio has the same abilty and capability.

well even i think that this set of defenders we have will grow up to be a top class one even in Europe, as we are already the best in England. But u know matches like the madrid one can have a bad influence. These defence will need two years till then if there are 3-4 those type of games our defence will be thrashed in the papers and the players might lose the confidence gained. We saw this season Gazz being relegated to the bench and Mickey replacing Wes in the centre of defence only because of one match. Even fergie didnt consider Wes and Gary's form before. Thats why we need a 31-32 year old defender who can be there fully fit for 2-3 years. So that we get that solidity and nastiness.

Stam ya he was nasty allright(as asked by me) suits the bill, but , ITS NEVER GONNA HAPPEN.
Donado u told me u were made a first team player

Oh I don't doubt for one minute that the Italian's like to be "naughty guys" and touch other players harder. They're a pack of pooftas.

I guess that one goes down to dodgy translation <img src="graemlins/angel.gif" border="0" alt="[Angel]" />

Rio is too concerned with trying to look good on the ball. I fully agree that United need old fashioned defenders. Dirty defenders. Maybe SAF should try to tempt either Paolo Montero or a Valencia's Pellegrino.

Yeah maybe so. Palli and Brucey didn't give a flying monkey how they looked on the ball so long as they kept it away from Peter Schmeichel's goalmouth - and they weren't too bad at passing. They were the ultimate combination, doused in experience. Perhaps Montero wouldn't be a bad buy, or a player of that nature.

doesn't he play on the left of defence?

Nesta would be ideal I think but there's little chance if that's gonna happen.
He is a nasty defender , tackles hard, he's quick , read the game well and is experienced.
He's good at the ball to and makes little dirty fauls (wich are difficult for the ref to see!) that piss off attackers.

You will not find a defender more willing to crop the forward more than Ayala. Gets away with it 50% of the time too somehow.

its a tricky one.
i thought ayala would go to real this summer, along with chivu. has ayala signed a new contract?

ive heard thuram is not the player he was, and i dont know anything of his character.

i honestly think we should snap up mexes and let the experience and the battle-hardness come with time. it is and would be more so a wonderful set of defenders we have. what a legacy

I would also go with Mexes, especially if he's available at 4mil, it's almost a free transfer considering his age and ability. And Thuram would complete the defensive requirements- wishful thinking.
For what its worth, I think Mexes has a good dirty streak, more than his idol Blanc.
