"We know we can reach a higher level of football than them and keep that up" said Queiroz. "Player for player, when we are at our best, we are better than Liverpool."

"I've always believed football is about technique. Liverpool are very strong physically but it's not about confrontation, more timing, space, attitude and anticipation."

"If you check history, the winning teams are the ones with brains and technique, not body-builders and muscle."

"That is why we don't want to go there for a war or a battle, we want to go and play our attacking football."

Well said Carlos! <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" /> <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" />

If you look at the Champions League winners Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Ajax, Milan, Juventus, and even Paisley's Liverpool, and the magnificent Busby Babes all of these teams were exceptional with timing, space, attitude and anticipation - the great sides are magical to watch, just as Brazil are in the World Cup so had we been throughout our 90's reign while Liverpool won nothing of note. They've not won the trophy for fecking years and Houllier is in his 5th and final year of his 5 year plan. A team that without any major injury problems went out of the Champions League to a Basle side that we battered 3-1 away from home. They're a pathetic side and it took Houllier years to realise that they were and try and start playing attacking football. But what does he pick? A donkey up front to punt balls up to, hope when he falls over he takes someone else down with him and that one trick pony can bolt after the loose ball. It relied in its plastic treble season on Gerrard's long ball punting ability and his physical play, rather than movement, creativity, intelligence, technique and flair. They're fecking boring to watch and are totally predictable in their play.

With a fast and powerful defender Wes Brown to mark Owen and brave and perfect tackles in the box nullifying his threat, O'Shea winning the aerial battles with Heskey, an out of form Gerrard and off the back of their humiliating defeat to Fulham with calls for his head starting. Ruud and Scholes will tear them apart, they'll have so little possession as Liverpool punt it and give away possession again and again while we play one touch keep ball and run them ragged. Its the best time to play them, and a defeat over them would not just be great revenge but a possible fatal blow for Houllier's job. With only a few points between us and Roy Keane, David Beckham, Rio Ferdinand, Nicky Butt coming back soon after long rests and January buys and loans too of players like Lopez or Cisse then we'll likely beat them again at OT with them 10 points behind us by the end of the season.

We're just one of those teams,
That you see now and then,
We often score six,
But we seldom score ten,
We beat 'em at home,
And we beat 'em away,
We kill any bastards,
That get in our way.
We are the pride of all Europe,
The cock of the North,
We hate the Scousers,
The Cockneys of course,
We are United,
Without any doubt,
We are the Manchester boys.

You're right it was quite embarassing to go out to Basle, but at the end of the day we had no chance of winning the trophy, so I'd prefer to see us in the UEFA cup which we are favourites to win.

Of course there's no guarantess we'll get past Vitesse Arnhem, but I'd love to see us in the final again. That game against Alaves was amazing, and hey if you win the CL and we win ours we can beat you in the Super Cup!! ;)

Sounds like you'd welcome relegation.

Already making excuses in case Liverpool wins tomorrow

"Player for player, when we are at our best, we are better than Liverpool."

Even with the injuries, that's new for me <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />
Blanc, O'Shea and Brown better than Hyypia, Henchoz and Babbel
Fortune, Neville, Forlan better than say Murphy, Gerrard and Baros

My guess - he can't speak English and someone improvised what he said ;)

I guess you needn't look further for the cheeky little fellow that drew up your game plan for the City game...

TRM.

Or the one against Fulham <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

Alex was saying that we might play more counter attacking football against them, but Carlo's comments make me think it might be more of our usual style. No hint yet about if it'll be 4-4-2 or 4-5-1, of if Veron will or not, but its clear that Scholes needs to be the midfield playmaker, and Fortune will provide the ball winning while keeping possession with simple passes to Giggs or Scholes. I think Forlan would be a good bet up front again, with Ole on the right, as at Newcastle, as Forlan is pacy and good on the break. I think we really need to use our wings more against them, so I'm hoping for good games from Giggs and Ole with lots of quality crosses and cutbacks.

do you not think that he is using those comments as a smokescreen? i reckon you lot are going to be a lot more cautious than you usually are against us.

ye i think so. Utd usually go for it from the start no matter who the opposition, not that it always works though. we are usually more cautious or defensive as i'm sure you will call it, especially against the top teams. I have to say its not the way all supporters like to see us play but in fairness to gerrard houllier we have a good record against the big teams

From the official newsletter:
You know the major injuries, Nicky Butt, Rio Ferdinand, David Beckham. Michael Stewart is OK, Gary Neville is OK. We still have some doubts at this moment regarding Laurent Blanc. We will have to wait until to make a decision. All the players that played against Basel are OK and will be fit to play Liverpool.

Newcastle and Basel were two great games, two great results. It was special because the wrong approach would be to spend time crying because one or two players - important players though they are - cannot play. We have to work with the players that are ready to play.

The players are confident they can do it, and they are committed to playing well and getting a good result. As we saw against Newcastle and Basel, the team worked well - we saw a team working together, supporting each other with the full commitment in the game. Everybody has worked hard to bring the results that we expect. That is why we are confident to play against Liverpool.

We are sure that we have a team working together with the desire, the right desire to bring the result back from Liverpool. We are ready to play good football - we have the quality to do it, we are doing OK. If we approach this game playing good quality football we are sure that we can do it better than Liverpool. That is why we are sure we will come back with a positive result from Liverpool.

Enjoy the game

Carlos Queiroz

And Alex said: "We will be setting ourselves up against Liverpool differently than we normally do,"

"Whenever we have played them over the last few seasons we have attacked them with five or six players every time we have had the ball. This time we might not do that and it might give them a few more things to think about. We'll definitely be prepared the right way this time."

I think it'll be a disciplined, focussed, possession game but deeper and more probing than usual. I'd also expect a lot of good individual performances.
