Before the end of this season, we all banged on about how we were well stocked in defence and on the wings and striking departments and what we all conferred on was that our midfield needed specific surgery.

And yet, within days of the transfer window opening, what does our esteemed and learned leader do? He goes out and buys a new defender and a winger cum in the hole striker!! It just goes to show how little we all know about the real state of Manchester United is, and indeed what transfers our club requires. There can be simply no doubt that SAF knows best what he needs and what he has at is disposal, both in his first team squad as well as youngsters coming through our youth ranks.

Im sure SAF will sign a class act midfield player to supplement Carrick, Fletcher, Anderson, Giggs etc, esp since we have now lost Hargreaves and Scholes, but I find it amusing, mainly to myself as having been a fan for 28 years that I still cant guess what the great old man will do! Just goes to show how little we all actually know and how incredibly unrealistic computer games like Football Manager are!!

But I tell you something, with the new likes of De Gea, Smalling, Jones, Young, Fabio, Hernandez, Cleverly, Welbeck gelling with older hands like Vidic, Rio, Evra, Fletcher, Carrick, Berbatov and Rooney as well as the 'mid range' experienced players like Anderson, Nani and Park, we have a completely new side to look forward to discovering. Its going to be great ... like we are entering a new era.

As for the midfielder he will sign, my money is firmly on Modric .... it will be a last week transaction and we will get mugged and have to pay £35m+. But if we can get him, I think we have the most balanced squad in European football with depth in every department and one capable of kicking Barcelona fat ass.

Who knows what kind of football they will play .... but I literally cant wait for it to start. Its a completely new generation .... SAFs 5th team .... and perhaps the one that will be his greatest ever!

Computer games have a lot to answer for. I see so many nutty comments in here that have clearly come from someone playing a computer game.

Jaap Stam......

you can never tell what fergie is going to do - the moves for Phil Jones and attempts to sign Varane make me think that Rio might have 1 good year left....maybe fergie has lost faith in evans as well

It made little sense to me when he signed Vidic and Evra mid season as our defence that year looked pretty solid that year.... but the great man is light years ahead of us in knowing what our team needs and how to successfully manage transition from one great team to the next without too much noticeable effe t on our ability to remain competitive.

The man is simply a genius multiplied by 10 and is without doubt the best signing Manchester United made in the past 24 years.

We weren't well stocked in the wings. Giggs hardly is a winger anymore, Park is better centrally and that leaves Nani and Valencia. I welcome the one winger and a young defender. It's also makes perfect sense that buy. Not because someone else was going for him but because we're most likely losing cover in Brown and O'Shea.

Keeper will definitely come. Most likely De Gea like everyone knows. But in midfield we could use 2 players or a step up from a home grown player instead of Gibson plus one established in the starting line up.

Well the OP is only right if we don't proceed to buy a CM this transfer window. Who we buy first isn't necessarily who we need the most. It's not like there is a danger of the season starting unexpectedly early.

Im not nervous at all that we have yet to invest in central midfield and am sure the club has plans and contingency plans already in play.

What did surprise me however was the acquisition of a defender and winger.
