Why weren't we in for him this summer??

We were looking for a young LB so why not him?

English, can pass the ball well, defend, support the attack and won't have any problems adjusting as he knows the language and plays with a lot of the United lads for England. He might have cost a bit more than Escude but it would've been worth it.

I hope we pick him up, I'd be delighted with a:

Bridge-O'shea-Rio-Gaz defence myself.

I think that we need more than one defender. I am still far from convinced by Silvestre. He may be great going forward but his defensive basics are still lacking.

Bridge looks good, Escude sounds great but I have never seen him play but either or both would have added depth to our squad.

but he'd probably cost 8-10 mil, would it be worth spending that and sacrificing that money for a fourth striker? I agree about Bridge but young English players are so expensive right now. Apart from Rio. :)

Good prospect. Still has a tendency to make mistakes, while Silvestre is better going forward, so at this point in time we should stick with Silvestre unless he starts whining about playing at CB. If the situation changes, we should definately be interested. Just needs experience imo.

The Long term left back question remains a huge mystery as long as Silvestre doesn't sign a new deal.

Why ? How long is left on his current deal ? I thought it covers him for a considerable period. Besides, Silvestre hasn't spoken out since the Summer, I think he may be accepting how important his attacking is to us.

It seems quite agreed (here at least!) that his deal ends at the end of the season... He joined in September 99 so he probably signed a four or five year deal. If it's four then it ends in the summer of 2003.

Basically this comes from reports claiming either United did NOT offer him a new deal or that he's not so keen to sign. All bizarre ofcource. It could be that he has a deal until 2004!

I've tried to find some old articles saying how many years he's signed for in 1999, but found nothing.

Soccernet has this in his profile:

With one year left on his contract at the start of the 2002/03 season, Silvestre's United future was placed in question as he spoke of his desire to return to the centre of defence.

Hmm, there was supposed to be a Q&A with Silvestre on the official site. I wonder if someone bothered sending a question as such.

2nd best to Carlos is Lizarazu. I hear Escude is set to replace Liz and maybe even surpass him.

Bridge isnt on same level, and neither is Ashley Cole, Silvestre is better than Cole.

Silvestre never gets beat ad going forward he is better than Giggs (more consistant and penetrative/effective)

His weakness is positional/concentration, which is a shame.

Silverstre started for France as LB in their game against Cyrus yesterday. I see him to be the most probable player to succeed Lizarazu in national team. So we have no need to spend 10m on Bridge just for a cover.

absolutely moronic statement, that one.....then again it's just Shao.....Silvestre's a defender, he defends, not run half the field with the ball, loose it, then get caught out of position.....but in fairness to him, much improved has he, both defensively and concentration wise....but to say his runs are more penetrative than the Welsh Wizard, well that's a six year voicing his opinion in this opinion free, idiot-tolerating board for you......

Bridge would cost quite a bit more than Escude.

He is also a fixture in the Southhampton 11(not missing a minute in almost two seasons, something like that), allowing him to challenge for England LB, so to join OT I guess he'd want the starting spot. And I'd have to agree he is not better than Mikey at this point, I mean Bridge looks very calm with the ball, doesn't make me as nervous as Silvestre sometimes does, but then he doesn't look as threatening either, I think we are quite lucky to have the threat of Silvestre there to overlap with Giggs.

Escude on the other hand is less established than Bridge, and seems to be willing to join knowing Silvestre would be first choice.

And moreover, I heard that Escude can play everywhere at the back, while so far I haven't heard that Bridge has played anywhere besides LB.

And Escude WANTS to join United. If the news are credible, that is.

Silvestre is a vital player for us cos he gives us balance when Giggs is out or is having one of his 'away' games.

Giggs is not as good as other players because of his inconsistancy. What is Giggs good at? He cant shoot, finish, head, cross, his flicks always fail, defenders tackle him far too often etc etc. And he isnt the one running up from LB is he?

Of course Silvestre isnt a great LW, but he is more effective than Giggsy on more occasions and does the job. Gets the ball, gets to the byline, crosses it. Simple. Lovely.

Doing the job 8 games out of ten is better than fluffing it then producing magic in 2 games out of 10.

I'm fed up of non-performers now, these 'best in the world' players need to actually play well to get that tag.

Giggs ave. rating over a season is probably something like 6.5/7.5.

Unless you're a saints fan, I wouldn't expect watching Bridge would make you nervous even if he was the lousiest player in the world!

Stick Silvestre in midfield where every wants to stop him and have Giggs make runs on the left from deep.

Let's see what you think then. I'll think you'll find out that part of how good Silvestre looks going forward is simple because he has less attention.

Strictly speaking, yes. They are not however from the UK but they are from the British Isles of which Great Britain is the largest island.
