The Welsh clubs in the EFL (Cardiff City, Swansea City, Wrexham and Newport County) are in talks to join a new expanded Welsh League cup which will allow them to qualify for European football as a Welsh representative but will mean they would be no longer elligible to qualify for Europe via the Premier League, FA Cup, or League Cup.

I believe so, TNS every year
Hmm I don't know if it's worth Wrexham, Cardiff or Swansea playing Europa/Conference League. These are clubs looking to get promoted and the championship is grueling schedule, we usually see a decline when clubs outside the traditional top 6 enter European competitions.

I remember United playing Wrexham in '91 cup winner's cup run when the Welsh teams were still entering the Welsh FA Cup and qualifying that way. Thought we'd seen the last of that.

Not sure if I like this idea, would have to ask the fans of the smaller Welsh teams. Denies a club a place in Europe, because lets face it one of these are definitely going to win it. But it's not like they go far in Europe currently barring TNS this season, and it would mean a good chance of seeing their team play Swansea, Cardiff, Wrexham etc. fairly regualrly which would be fun for them. Don't know what they'd prefer.

There are some anolamies still existing in European football, so would assume it's legally ok. Never tried it, but from playing Football Manager games there's a challenge that people try with FC Vaduz of Liecehnstein who play in the Swiss Leagues. They can't qualify through their position in the league but can from winning the Liechenstein cup which they still enter. The idea is to try and get them to win the Champions League. Win the cup which gets them into the Conference League, win that which gets them into Europa, win that which gets them into the CL. Fail at any stage and you're back to the start unless you've boosted the Liechenstein co-efficients enough to win directly into the Europa or CL through winning the cup by some good showings in Europe.

The utterly ridiculous Total Network Solutions are from England (Oswestry) so it's only fair an actually Welsh club represents Wales.

Isn't it a merger between a Welsh Town and an English Town?

Monaco represent France in the champions league and we citofonare argue they are not French.

I didn't know that, but it's still quality they get to play away at Fiorentina in the week.

What happened to Cwmbran? Are they still going? Not sure if I've spelled it right either, sorry Wales.

It will mainly be because Ryan Reynolds wants to take his FC Hollywood franchise into the European championships.

Think of the Amazon Prime documentaries...

Yes, first they were Llansantffraid FC actually based in Wales just across from Oswestry. Won the Welsh Cup and got a big sponsorship deal from Total Netwrok Solutions, changed their name to that soon after.

Meanwhile Oswestry Town existed as a seperate team, also playing in the Welsh setup despite being in England. Oswestry's owners proposed a merger and it happened so they ended up representing both towns. Brighton and Hove Albion are the two towns aren't they? Not a merger though I don't think. Dagenham and Redbridge are?

Total Network Solutions' sponsorship deal ran out and that company had merged with BT anyway and no longer existed so they became The New Saints. Llansantffraid's nickname was always the saints anyway, and Saint Oswald is associated with the town of Oswestry.

Thanks Wikipedia!

There's been some Scottish teams playing in the English system before and vice versa. Berwick Rangers in the Scottish system located in the extreme North East corner of England.

Was reading about this topic again yesterday. Someone else made the same point and it's mental when you think about it.

46 league games and upto 3 playoff matches, FA Cup, League Cup, Welsh League Cup, and if they qualified Europe as well. At a time when some of the big players and managers aren't too happy about playing so many matches these want to play about 70 a season too.

If any of the Welsh clubs were in League One or Two (possibly only Newport after this season), they have the EFL Trophy as well.
