Waiting to sign a player after CL qualification a mistake.

I have read talk about United waiting until after securing CL qualification before buying another player. The reasoning being that we become more attractive to top players when they know we are in the CL proper.

I think this could be a big mistake. If the unthinkable happens we will miss out.

The problems of last year, particularly complacency, will continue. We will not be able to strengthen the squad because none of the really good players will want to join us if we are not in the CL. At the moment I believe that we are considered the top team in England (I might be biased) but if Arsenal and Liverpool finish above us again and we win nothing, we become much less attractive to the star players. Will we still have the 'clout' to attract world class players if we are not in 2003/04 CL?

I say get the players now so that we have the squad to win the premiership or, at least, secure CL qualification. The alternative could be the end of the good times.

There's a possibility that the player we're after might be waiting too, not just the PLC!

As I've said before, I think a deal is in place for someone but nowt'll be signed 'til we beat the Hungarians.

A scary thought indeed but if we don't qualify, I think either a) we'll buy a young up and comer or b) promote one of the young reserves to the first team and go with him.

I think it's kind of obvious why Danny Webber's loan to Watford was only for a month. He is getting about 5 to 6 first team games under his belt in case when he comes back, he's the 4th striker.

Like I keep saying, the loss of finances that comes with non participation in the CL is a big chunk of change the PLC will miss. Don't expect any significant signings if we don't get past the Hungarians on Tuesday.

IMO of course.

Unfortunately I agree.

I think O'Shea looks the goods so our defence will be strong next year (Gaz/Wes, Rio, J O'S, Mickey or Escude?). On paper midfield is great so all we need is a fourth striker - now as well as for next year.

If we don't beat the Hungarians will be finish above Arsenal, Liverpool and the rest? We are not clearly ahead of them as we were a year ago. If we are not in the top two we will have to qualify again, same problem as this year.

I know the defence has got most of the blame for last year but midfield dropped from the standards of previous seasons. If Fergie thought Diego was more likely to cause Arsenal problems than Ruud at OT last season then Fergie reckons Ruud was very tired. It is obvious need a fourth striker.

All we need is someone to add a spark to midfield/attack and we will be back. It gets frustrating when it looks that close but we don't buy.

Don't know about 6-0 but I do expect to qualify. What I worried about is IF we fail it could be difficult to regain/retain our place as top club in England.

As much as it's what we all want (and what every other football fan wants for his team), being the top club in England wasn't going to last forever. We had an exceptional period during the nineties, the sort of period that happens once every few decades and we shouldn't expect to be top club in England anymore, especially after last year. I also personally wouldn't "worry" about not being top club anymore. Surely our league is healthier, more competitive and a bit less of of SPL type joke when we don't run away with it every year? It makes life more interesting too.

Just trying to promote some realism on to the forum. We can't win it 8 years out of 10 for ever now can we? Worrying about not being top club seems a waste of time to me. Of course I want us to do well, but after last year I wouldn't be surprised if we don't again this year. So what? We don't have a divine right to win trophies every year. Besides, I think there is dead wood at OT and another trophyless season may serve us better. Of course, they could prove me wrong and I hope they do and we win it all this year, but I won't be worried if we don't.

Who are the dead wood?

I try and be a football fan first, Man Utd fan second but my heart puts things the other way round.

Not winning the Prem for a few years might bring a bit more of an atmosphere back to Old Trafford, but there has to be a better way!

I was a young lad travelling the country supporting the lads through the eighties and had a ball. You never knew from one week to the next what kind of performance we'd put in - but it was NEVER dull !

That said the thought of another long baron spell just doesnt bare thinking about. Having a year off is one thing, but we HAVE to regain our crown this year and have a damn good go at Europe while we're at it.

How did I know that would be the question you would ask? I shan't turn this into another "so and so out" thread though lchk. Sorry. There's bound to be on already on the go somewhere that you can join in.

important year this, dans.

IF we struggle and lack the hunger of the past, i think there might be a clear out of some sorts.

giggs, becks, scholes, to name a few, might have to move on, TBH i think its natural if it happens.. these lads have won everything over the last decade, it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't have the same enthusiasm... and its seems as if they don't.. only time will tell.

'When' we beat the hungarians out of sight, and after we've battered Chelsea, you'll all be singing a different tune.

There must be more Siddy and Scouse fans on here than I thought - people are certainly a bit quick to start sounding the end of an era.

In case you havent noticed folks - we're a bloody good team.

You've taken it wrong way I think. My point is really that the arse, the scousers even Leeds and Newcastle also have potentially bloody good teams. We are no longer head and shoulders above the rest - last season proves that. Those who think it was a blip and that we'll continue on our merry way to another god knows how manyn titles are living in a dream world. I don't see the same team, playing with the same confidence and self belief as I did 3 years ago. This is an observation NOT a critcism.

Hit it right on the nail. In fact I would say Arsenal have probably got a better team than us now, the way they pass and move the ball around reminds me of the old '99 Utd.

Sadly we have looked disjointed and hesitant in our pass-and-move game and opponents are able to read us better and hence counter us more effectively.

But win, lose or draw we should still remain as true fans of our team - after all, we had far worse times in the dark days of the 80s (at least I did).

Usually no, none at all.

I cant believe the lack of faith!

Sure the like of Arse & Newcastle have improved but...

We havent seen the full potential of the current squad. Veron owes us a top season and I believe he'll deliver. Forlan is getting there and just needs a goal. Rio hasnt even started yet!

Come on guys dont lose the faith.

We WILL win the Prem this time, and hopefully the European Cup too.

Whats wrong with the more realistic view that you may win the title, but that there is a decent chance that you won't?

You're lacking faith..

Probably because you weren't born in Manchester..

You must be stupid not to already realise you've won the title

long way to go before jumping to conclusions.... i think the next two months will give us an indication to how our season will be..

i hope they're up to the challenge..

That's it. I need to visit Manchester. Then all my faith would be restored eh our kid? And we'll win the league. And the CL. But not the FA Cup - it's too minor.

No one likes the FA Cup anymore...even less so now Keane's slated it..

I'm ashamed that we've ever won it...

I'm disgusted that we even bothered beating you with that last gasp piece of magic by Eric. We should have let you have it. It means nothing.

I'm glad we lost in hindsight...

I'm only interested in the big two comps now and feel that it is my right to decide that all other comps are rubbish..

So who are the dead wood Dans..Inch is itching to know..

Quality

In that case there can be little doubt in your mind that you'll be winning it this year...

Keep the faith
