..imminent according to Cricinfo.

First test against NZ in Hyderabad could be his last.

Not a surprise. Unlike Dravid he was past it. Still a great player for India.

Yea. Great player and a shame about the comments that've come his way in the past 12 months. But his performances deserved it.

Am excited for the future. Except Kris Srikanth, the idiot, picked Yuvraj and Raina in the test squad.

Would rather see Rohit/Pujara/Rahane before those 2.

Yuvraj is in the test squad?
WHAT feckING WHAT?

Anyway glad that dickhead Srikanth is going.

Oh and this is greatest test innings ever in the greatest test ever player.

I don't mind Raina, but Yuvraj?

I don't mind Raina, but Yuvraj?

Am sorry. Yuvraj is not in it. I was under the impression he was.

But Raina is a pretty disappointing selection atm. He needs to go away and work on his weaknesses. Even in the IPL he was struggling with the occasional short ball.

We all know what he can do in India. Picking him here will win matches, but it's not a long term fix.

Don't think he did justice to his talents....He's obviously had a memorable career, and played some incredible knocks - but he should have been even better.

Maybe he was too nice and lacked the sheer will that others possessed - but that can't be right either, THAT knock against Australia was all about mental strength.

Big game player. Some people are like that, right? They can sense the occasion.

Definitely should've had better numbers than his average suggests.

Well he's announced it now.

Players/Officials: VVS Laxman
Teams: India
VVS Laxman has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect, ahead of the home Test series against New Zealand starting August 23 in his hometown Hyderabad. Laxman, 37, has had a glittering career since his debut in 1996 but his recent Test form had raised question marks over his continuance in the side. He will, however, play for his domestic team Hyderabad this year in the Ranji Trophy.

"I would like to announce my retirement from international cricket with immediate effect," Laxman said at an emotional press conference in Hyderabad. "I have always kept my country's success and need ahead of my personal aspirations. And while I would love contributing to the team's success, especially against England and Australia, I think this is the right to give opportunity to the youngsters in home conditions ahead of international assignments.

"It was a tough decision to take, I have always listened to my inner conscience. I have always done that right through my career. There was a lot of debate in the last four days. I felt this is the right time to move on."

Laxman made his debut against South Africa in the home series in 1996 but shot to the limelight with a knock of 167 against Australia in Sydney in 2000. Perhaps his greatest achievement was his 281 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata in 2001, against Australia, then the highest score by an Indian batsman in Tests. Part of a record stand with Rahul Dravid, it set up a stunning victory for the home team after following on and ended Australia's consecutive 16-match winning streak.

Laxman last played an ODI in 2006 but had, by then, become a regular in the Test side and played his 100th Test in 2008, against Australia in Nagpur. Laxman made six of his 17 Test centuries against Australia, with an average of 49.67 in 29 Tests and success both home and away.

His performances in the eight Tests during India's disastrous tours of England and Australia in 2011 were disappointing. He averaged 22.75 in England and 19.38 in Australia, prompting some to call for him being dropped from the side with a long-term view of grooming a youngster to take his place.

Tendulkar's the last of that era left. Fitting I guess. He was the first and he shall be the last.

It's going to take quite some time now for India to have a settled consistent test side.

Only Tedulkar left to go now. He's still got it left in him.

As a South African, I've always liked VVS, classy player. Agree that he could've done so much more. Had so much time at his best. Well done to him for stepping down.

Wow, Sachin is still going. Crazy I tell you.

:(

When Tendulkar also goes, I might just stop watching cricket for a while. All my favorite players are retired/retiring.

Good player. As with his batting, the timing of his retirement is good. He said the NZ series is a good opportunity to give a young player a go before the tough home series' and then tours abroad next year which is spot on IMO. Especially given Laxman is well past it now.

Only Sachin left out of the players I grew up watching. Cricket will truly be dead to me when that happens. Although the reasons are plenty and not just players retiring of course.

VVSL 281 vs Australia in 2001 remains the best innings I've ever seen in cricket in all the years I have followed the game.

He clearly 'suffered' by having so many other top class players around him, perhaps the pressure was not enough sometimes because Sachin et al could do the job too.

At times ridiculously talented. A great great career - he will retire proud and satisfied at a brilliant career.

It does feel like a generation is ending soon. Once Tendulkar and Ponting go, that will be that. Kallis came later...or atleast blossomed later, so i don't count him from then.

Jayawardane and Vettori are a bit of a stretch - 97 debut? For me you have to have played in the 90s properly to belong to that generation. I'd make 95-96 the cutoff.
Yeah. Sachin infact made his debut in 1989! Even Pointing had his in 95... so really Sachin is the last one left of the generation that included greats like Warne, Mcgrath, Murali, Lara, Waugh.

Was just going to say that. Sachin is from a generation even before the other names like Dravid, Laxman etc. GOAT simply for his longevity and adaptability IMO.
