Newcastle United have reached agreement with Ajax over Dutch international Vurnon Anita, Sky Sports understands.

The Magpies have been chasing Anita for most of the summer, but whilst they have endured frustration with a number of targets in the past few weeks - they now look to be close to finalising one.

Anita, 23, who can play left-back or in midfield, is now set to make his farewell appearance for Ajax on Sunday - when they open their league campaign against AZ Alkmaar.
Reports in Holland suggest the deal is around €8million (£6.2million), although the player is yet to finalise terms.

He is likely to fly to England on Monday to undergo a medical ahead of completing a move to Tyneside.

Anyone seen him play then?

Played in midfield in their Super Cup game. Think he's a bit a hit and miss player from what I've seen. Seen him a few times with Ajax and Holland and they're probably right that he's somewhat a poor full back defensively but good going forward (hmm never heard that before regarding a full back).

He'll add depth to the squad but I don't know much about him to say if he's a good signing or not. Only 23 and experienced for his age. Probably a decent buy.

It's Newcastle and given their recent transfer record I reckon Liverpool will be sniffing about by January with a bid of £30 million.

I remember a time where Newcastle used to destroy young players, but that relegation really did the club the world of good. Great little team they've got at the minute.

Will be interesting to see if they can build on last season's success.

I'm getting right around Newcastle this season.

Me too.

And Anita looks a good buy. Really quick player. I see him playing higher up the field as he matures, similar to another Dutch left midfielder, Royston Drenthe.

Debuchy's transfer won't go through, will it? It seems like Lille want more than £7m that Newcastle were prepared to offer and Newcastle won't go higher.

He would solve both our left back and our CM problems, at the same time.

Also, we already got one player without balls, a girl named Anita would fit in perfectly.

Having his medical atm.

Any update on Debuchy? With him and a new centre half you'll get to another level I think. Last I've heard you bid £6m for Debuchy and £3.1m for Douglas but both were rejected by Lille and Twente respectively.

You are offering £6m for him, it's laughable really.

They got Cabaye for £4.5m and Tiote for £3m. They probably reckon they can buy Debuchy and Douglas from the exact same clubs for similar money.

TBF Newcastle have been amazing negotiators over the last couple of years. Ba went for nothing (relegation clause though), Cisse for £12m was a bargain, Tiote for £3m, Cabaye for £4m and now Anita for £6m.... value.

Cisse cost £8m.

Well that's why Lille want a lot more money after selling Cabaye for £4.5m, one of the bargains of the last few seasons. Debuchy is a local lad, and has two or three years minimum left in his contract. He is agitating for a move at the moment, but at the end of the day he won't go to war with Lille because he loves the club.

When people criticised them for bringing Shefki Kuqi to replace Carroll instead of going for a proper replacement straightaway I said that they were right to do so - they weren't going to get a good deal for anyone late in January and with £35m in the bank they could do wonders in the Summer window. They were safe at the time with more than 30 points, needing about 10 from the remaining 15-18 games to stay up so it was a very good decision. They're much stronger now than they were prior to Carroll's departure and amazingly enough even after buying Ben Arfa, Tiote, Cabaye, Cisse, Santon and Ba should still have £10m+ left from the Carroll money.

No value in the market.

The hottest property they have despite all of the very good players they have should be the Graham Carr and his scouting team. Its a miracle other clubs haven't been banging his door down offering pots of cash a la Frank Arnesen from Spurs. Especially as Carr has actually had some success.

Interestingly, the rumour up here was that this was one reason Hughton got binned - dithered over Tiote and Ben Arfa until Ashley actually took the plunge without his say so. Best and Perch were supposedly Hughton's buys.

Very sad to see him injured, he's a cracking player. When I was in the newbs, there's a good poster called ajaxsuarez (allow it) who said Anita is the real gem of Ajax, and is a better deal than Eriksen. Then lo and behold Newcastle, who have a good scouting network, sign him and I've been impressed with him so far this season. If it's a long-term injury it'll be a major blow to Newcastle.
