why does one player in the team have a different coulor kit on from his team matesThat's the libero.
He doesn't have to rotate with the rest of the players to serve but he isn't allowed to strike the ball when its higher than the net. It's a defensive position.

Another question for the volleyball experts: I thought the ball had to cross the vertical plane of the net before you could touch it? I noticed several players in the volleyball reaching way over the net to block opponents shots.
You are allowed to do that only when you block. It would otherwise be too difficult for the blockers.
