According to Italian sources, the main objective of Sir Alex Ferguson's high-profile trip to Rome was not Lazio's Alessandro Nesta, but AS Roma wing-back Vincent Candela.
The left-sided defender is a French international teammate of Manchester United's Fabien Barthez and Mikael Silvestre and has enjoyed an outstanding season in Serie A.

Ferguson is understood to be seeking to bolster his fullback options at the end of the season, particularly with veteran Denis Irwin likely to leave Old Trafford in the summer.

Albiston hinted yesterday that Fergie wasn't just watching Nesta at the Rome derby, so there could be some substance in this report;

IMO, Tribalfootball normally just spread rumours without any quotes or any other prove.
Not a very reliable source.

Yeah, thats somewhat true. But as blythy says, he definitely wasn't there just for Nesta - who's probably going to Juve btw.

The good thing about Fergie going to Rome is that he could've been looking at any number of players. Nesta, Samuel, Candela, Montella etc. I suspect he left with a favourable impression of Vinnie Montella. ;)

It's obvious that when he is watching such an big match, there is not only one player who is a potential transfer targets.

Btw, Candela would be a good addition to the squad as he can play RB and LB. But he won't be cheap and becoming 29 years old in October, he is a very doubtful transfer. The board didn't want to pay around 25 million quid for Thuram last year who has the same age. So I think Candela would be a similar situation.

I seriously doubt a player will not be allowed to switch to a certain club because of that. So they'll just have another agent working on this transfer.

The link is that one of CEO of GEA (the firm that represents Nesta and a bunch of other players) is the son of Juve's general director.

Hardly anything to investigate.

On Candela, I doubt Roma will let him go, or any other player for that matter. Better bid for Nesta ;)

That's true though. I can't find the reason why Roma will sell Candela or Samual. On the other hand, after Lazio's poor season so far, a lot of players (Nesta, Crespo, Mendita, etc.) may become available.

I don't see Candela leaving Roma. He's very happy in Italy.
