From PlanetFootball:
MANCHESTER UNITED have pulled out of their bid to sign Juventus defender Lilian Thuram, and confirmed that Juan Sebastian Veron wants to leave the club, according to an Italian website.

Tuttomercatoweb.com has quoted chief executive Peter Kenyon on the transfer front, as the market waits for The Red Devils to make a major move during the close season.

"It is fair to say that, at the moment, we have abandoned the negotiations in order to bring the Juventus player (Thuram) to our club as we are looking towards other clear targets," Kenyon is quoted as stating.

That would appear to be a reference to Leeds United's England star Rio Ferdinand, who is also on the Old Trafford club's list of top targets, although Lazio`s Alessandro Nesta is still an attractive option for The Red Devils.

Thuram's agent Oscar Damiani has already suggested that his client will remain in Turin if the proposed switch to Manchester falls through.

Tuttomercatoweb.com also claim that Kenyon has revealed, for the first time, that United may be prepared to cash in on their record signing Veron.

With the club being linked with a number of the Argentinian's international colleagues, and strongly denying constant speculation surrounding a possible sale back to Lazio, it had seemed that the talented midfielder would be given another season to prove his true worth to the side.

However, Kenyon has been quoted as affirming: "As far as Veron goes, the player wants to leave Manchester but there is still no acceptable offer for him."

The alleged comments from the chief executive would certainly be the most revealing to have come out of the Old Trafford club during the close season.

Ok, its most likely bollox because the italian press do seem to fabricate quotes all the time, but it will be interesting to see if Kenyon denies this officially, like he did about Butt the other day.

I think its a complete fabrication.

Seba has already said that the Italian press have been trying to stir up some controversy to unsettle him at United.

Me thinks you're right.....the quote just says too much `IMO...Kenyon would never say that unless he was definite Veron was going to be sold.
:(

They've just translated from tuttomercatoweb.com - but I suspect they're a tabliod type italian site - are they a newspaper as well?

PlanetFootball are still renowned for their crap

Kenyon would NOT say something like that. Why on earth would he tell the Italian media "Veron wants to leave" when everything he has said officially and through domestic sources is that he's staying!!

FFS, what a load of bollox

....and this should be in the Transfer Talk Forum!

Who knows Veron's real mind? I can say none of us know. May be he really want to stay in United. May be he see it just as a short break from his passport scandal in Italy. Who knows? In the last season, whenever there is a news Veron was not settled or want to leave, a week later there was another news said Veron was happy to stay. And then two more weeks later another news that Veron would like to return to Italy appeared. Plenty of totally opposite quotes and thoughts.

But I think it is coming to the end soon. Whether Veron will stay or leave and what's his true mind, we will know at or before the start of the new season.

And, predictably, it was bollocks and did get a swift confirmation of that by kenyon -
<a href="http://www.manutd.com/news/fullstory.sps?inewsid=18761" target="_blank">ManUtd.com</a>

But predictably Nils Muppet Tommason, you posted it in the first place.

Peter Kenyon

Peter Kenyon has denied making quotes attributed to him on an Italian website, also picked up by planetfootball.com.

Chief Executive Kenyon reportedly said the United were no longer interested in Lilian Thuram, but the chase for Rio Ferdinand was still on. Peter says that the quotes are total fiction.

"It is fair to say that, at the moment, we have abandoned the negotiations in order to bring the Juventus player (Thuram) to our club as we are looking towards other clear targets," Kenyon is quoted as saying.

He is also reported to have spoken about the future of Juan Veron.

"As far as Veron goes, the player wants to leave Manchester but there is still no acceptable offer for him," the quotes read.

Again, Peter denies making the claim.

Strange denial, just of having said it, rather than it actually being true, he's not for sale etc.

With a caveat about it being bollocks, but what you don't understand is that something can be newsworthy, and not true. As long as its not just repetition of something someone else has posted, then its still of interest to some, and those it isn't don't have to read it.

That's the biggest load of bollox I've read yet!

It's a joke. First Thuram's agent claims we told him we're hot on Ferdinand, then this crap. United people don't keep quiet for weeks only to open themselves up completely for people who'll tell the whole world.

Well to be honest, most of these websites have little journalistic integrity. They routinely steal rumours from one another and then publish them to boost their hits.

Haven't we said that enough times already?

The idea of the chief executive blabbing nonsence to Italian press (or more to the point, NOT blabbing obviously) seems more important than never ending 'not for sale'.

Not to mention the article was also about Thuram. They've asked Peter, he said 'I didn't say any of those things' case closed.

No reason to look for JFK's everywhere!

When PlanetFootball finds something so bollocks that they have to quote tutto-how-can-you-trust-anyone-with-that-name.com you know you are in for a big bucketful of shite!
