From PlanetFootball:
MANCHESTER UNITED have pulled out of their bid to sign Juventus defender Lilian Thuram, and confirmed that Juan Sebastian Veron wants to leave the club, according to an Italian website.
Tuttomercatoweb.com has quoted chief executive Peter Kenyon on the transfer front, as the market waits for The Red Devils to make a major move during the close season.
"It is fair to say that, at the moment, we have abandoned the negotiations in order to bring the Juventus player (Thuram) to our club as we are looking towards other clear targets," Kenyon is quoted as stating.
That would appear to be a reference to Leeds United's England star Rio Ferdinand, who is also on the Old Trafford club's list of top targets, although Lazio`s Alessandro Nesta is still an attractive option for The Red Devils.
Thuram's agent Oscar Damiani has already suggested that his client will remain in Turin if the proposed switch to Manchester falls through.
Tuttomercatoweb.com also claim that Kenyon has revealed, for the first time, that United may be prepared to cash in on their record signing Veron.
With the club being linked with a number of the Argentinian's international colleagues, and strongly denying constant speculation surrounding a possible sale back to Lazio, it had seemed that the talented midfielder would be given another season to prove his true worth to the side.
However, Kenyon has been quoted as affirming: "As far as Veron goes, the player wants to leave Manchester but there is still no acceptable offer for him."
The alleged comments from the chief executive would certainly be the most revealing to have come out of the Old Trafford club during the close season.
