Veron and defenders...

IF, and I repeat IF Veron was to leave us in the close season, do we really need a new midfielder, or should United just spend it all and more on class defenders??

Or maybe buy a squad player for some midfield berth? No idea who though....

I don't think we would bring in a big name midfielder to replace him if he left since we already have a solid starting 4 plus Butt, Fortune, Chadwick, Stewart etc. Unless of course a player like Dunn or D'Allesandro became available.

If Larry leaves then we will need to invest in two central defenders, if O'Shea continues to improve then that's a bonus, but we shouldn't assume that this will be the case yet.

Butt's a brilliant squadplayer. However I've never been really impressed by Fortune and Chadwick. Fortune's too old to really improve his game, while Chadwick has BIG flaws in his game, exciting as he may be. Stewart is nothing more than an unproven talent. Yet. Where's Fletcher BTW? He was supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread...... I know he was injured for several months, but has he come back almost as good as new (old)??

Re O'Shea: I suspect he's too slow to my likening...... But hey, Hyypiä is no Maurice Greene either....

A midfield player we should all keep an eye on for the future is Rafael Van Der Vaart of Ajax, the guy is only £18 is valued @ £20million and is unbelievable.

If Veron went Stankovic for me would be the best replacement. The Lazio lad has all the qualities that the former Yugoslav great Dejan Sevicevic had. He can lay on either wing, in central midfield and as a support striker. He and Joe cole would be great replcements for our South american Budha.

The priorty must be to get 2 new defenders and one new striker. In case of midfielder we should try to look at someone inexpensive and have potential. It should be the job of the scouts to find out the next Johnsen or Ole.

I agree with uranushk1 on this for sure ... the incoming midfielder than shouldn't be anything more than 10mil ( 2 points to note - I would like Van Bommel though .. and that's the assumption of "V" is really being sold ) ..
We have seen ourselves being "choked" in midfield a couple of time this season ... I really wouldn't think we should do the same again ... CB and Fullbakcks being the obvious priority !! ( 4-3 again !!?!?! ... why can't we just keep some clean sheets ?? <img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" /> )

I've got a very good feeling about O'Shea - and there's no one better than Fergie than fostering the development of talented players.

I'm also hoping

- we get a good defensive coach in which would help Silvestre's development;

- we splash out on a CB and RB;

- we get one of these 6' 6" Scandavian types to stick in midfield to kick the feck out of the opposition runners when we're sitting on a 4-1 lead and cruising...

I agree that united should buy, at least two good central defender (I hope they have the qualities like Pallister or Stam). And if Veron goes, I think Rivaldo can come.
He can play forward alongside Van Nistelrooy, or in attacking midfielder.
I heard he wants to leave Barca.
