should we be chasing the guy...if so who would he replace?

We already have chased him. Rumour has it we put in a bid for Van Bommel last year. He said "No", preferring to stay at PSV.

Is he good? Yes he is. Who would he replace? Keane or Butt - Van Bommel is a defensive mid-fielder with lots of vision and a vicious shot.

But he prefers to join the Arse. That seems pretty clear. So forget about him.

amen

from soccernet:

"United are also in the hunt for Van Bommel, a former PSV team-mate of Ruud van Nistelrooy - although Arsenal remain favourites to sign him."

Any truth at all or just Media hype? Yes we are overcrowded in the middle but I just wondered whether there was any substance to the printing.

He's a class act...don't really want the Arse to have him.

United don't need van Bommel at the present time. If Keane signs a new contract he still has 2-3 years left at the top and a replacement for him doesn't need to be found at the moment. van Bommels likely destination will be Arsenal to replace Vierra if he leaves this summer. United will need to bring in 2-3 new defenders and possibly another striker this summer. Only area of the midfield that could use some addition would be on the left but I think that would be a lower priority.

After watching van Bommel against England, I really do hope that is not the best he can do. For god's sake, if it is, let Arsenal have him. Fergie could chain Keane's legs together and he would still dominate vB.

V Bommel -&gt; Arsenal
Viera - &gt; United.

Simple really. ;)

He'd replace Butt on the bench, maybe. Replace Keane? behave yourself.

He wouldn't get on the team unless Keane was hurt.

He didn't impress me that much last night, and it seems the comments of reds on here about Reizeger are well deserved, he's no better than phil.

Van Bommel wouldn't be a bad addition if our midfield wasn't already packed. Doubt he'll ever be good enough to replace Keano though.

He doesn't/can't drive a team forward like Keane can. While his passing game is nice and crisp, he doesn't really go anywhere with it--I mean, he seriously played like bloody Didi Hamann last night, and it was boring me too sleep.

v.Bommel is one of Holland's greates talents! He is a mean lean fighting machine! He has good vision, good tactics, very good shot and he is a bad motherfecker when he has to! I hope ManUnited will get v.Bommel to partner Keane in the midfield! Seriously, he is good!!

you mean sell Butt, Scholes or veron for van Bommel ? <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[No No]" />

Van Bommel may be a great player but as has been said before - currently our midfield is too packed. When Keane retires the time will be right for Van Bommel to arrive at Old Trafford.

But when that comes around Van Bommel won't nessecarily be available. As great as he is / has the potential to be if we don't buy him now then we'll never see him in a United shirt. And right now theres no need to buy him.

If we were to sign another midfielder this season on in the summer i for one would be pretty anoyed !!!! (only if we hadn't sold one of our existing players Obviously )
To be honest i was slightly pissed off when we signed a midfielder in the summer (Veron) when we should have defo signed a defender ..... that can't happen again this summer  Defender, Defender, Defender ..... in that order (then maybe a striker <img src="graemlins/nervous.gif" border="0" alt="[Nervous]" /> )

<img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" /> <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" /> <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" /> <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" />

The reason for signing a midfielder was to freshen it up a bit. You could guarantee that for a big game unless someone was injured the midfield would be Giggs, Scholes, Keane and Beckham. They are all quality players and deserve there place. But when there is no competition you get a situation where the players can become complacent. Now we have Veron we can drop players - and that is exactly what Roy Keane wanted to see happen when he made those famous comments after the game against Munich.

I agree that we need to strengthen the defence and I am sure that will be our main priority this summer. However, if the right man is available in midfield for the right place them why not sign him to increase the competition some more?

Maybe SAF want him replace Becks !! Van Bommel usually play Right Midfield at PSV and he capable filled in this position. So it is great idea to bring him to ManUtd.

Our midfield is also packed with great players and it is unlikely that the club will spend another 15M on another one.

I actually mentioned it before ... when all the talks here was surrounding "V" leaving this summer ... that I have a secret guy in mind but until the day "V" really do go else I don see any possibility of anymore new midfielders ..

VBommel is the guy I was refereing to ... and he has mentioned to the press before he WILL JOIN ONLY BIG CLUB LIKE MAN UTD and nothing else!!! couple with he's a good friend with RVN ...

I like this guy really lot ... but to have him swapping with "V" then I need a bit more thinking ... :(
