Valdano on Beckham...

Jorge Valdano is a man renowned for his eloquence and use of language when describing football. A man with an economics degree, your average footballer he most certainly isn't.

This week he gave his opinion on why he likes Beckham who he considers to be a central midfielder exiled to the wing (that sorts out Figo and Beckham being in the same team).

However, what I really liked was that Valdano's view that when Becks strikes a ball he "fills it with privileged information" - I think I know what he's trying to say.

Anyway, I'm going out on a limb and stating that Beckham will definitely go to madrid this year because:

1. They'll promise to play him in the middle
2. Its the only club more glamorous than United
3. Sir Alex will always cast a shadow over him, whilst in Madrid the players are hold the power

What do you guys think.

I think:
1. They've got Zidane
2. No it isn't
3. And del Bosque will let him do what he likes? I think not.

What is this Sir Alex will always cast a shadow over him bollox? How easily we are led to believe all the crap the gutter press want us to believe.

OK let me clarify what I mean't by a "shadow".

Man Utd and Real Madrid are two very different clubs. Ours is wonderfully managed by Sir Alex who is the imposing will on everything that happens there. No player is bigger than he is (as he's shown on many occasions since 1986), and you either do things his way or your out.

At R.Madrid, it is well known by everyone who follows the club closely that the power is held by the president, and by some key players. Namely, Raul, Hierro (principally), Carlos, Guti, Figo (to a lesser degree).

Del Bosque's talent, and the reason behind his success is that he understands his position, and never makes any decision to unsettle public opinion, or the established players.

i.e. Raul is untouchable (even off form). All managers who have tried to impose themselves on the players, and gone against public opinion have gone (Beenhaaker, Toshack, Benito Floro, Heynkes).

At United, Ferguson has no problem dropping beckham, selling Ince and Stam etc.

Beckham at Real would have different pressures, but he would not have a manager who is bigger than he is (BTW I prefer the United status quo to madrids).

If florentino perez takes Beckham to real, he wants him in the team to sell shirts. Del Bosque will not be able to keep Beckham on the bench, unless they lost lots of games, at which stage he'd lose his job before Beckham got dropped.

PS - Playing in the middle I meant next to Makelele. Not in Zidane's position.

I volunteer to disprove that.

And you think Del Bosques' method of "man-management" would get more out of Beckham on the pitch than that of Fergusons'? I think Ferguson keeps Beckham focussed and perhaps also with his two feet firmly on the ground.

playing in CM alongside Makelele he'd be a better bet than Flavio.
i never get why it would be such a problem Figo and Becks together. what would be interesting wuold be to see if Real change their predominantly short-ball game in favour of Becks winging the ball 60-70 yards to Raul etc ?

no I don't. I agree with you actually. But the only thing that matters is what David Beckham thinks

Earlier this season they were playing Combiasso instead of Flavio and itbackfired for them. With their full backs always attacking they need two blocking men in the middle.

I think Beckham will improve his overall game if he plays in a different league i.e. La Liga.

He may well improve who's to say - he might fail miserably! You never know. For Englands' sake we could do with half our team going abroad and playing in another league I think.

But saying Ferguson casts a shadow over him and saying Del Bosques' methods would improve him were opinions I didn't agree with. That's all.

Statement from Real Madrid on David Beckham this evening.
Started a thread in another forum before noticing this one. Apologies
