Why is it so fecking slow? It has loads more stuff on it than either the Spanish or UK ones, but it's like a snail when trying to download. Do they ramp down the bandwidth depending on your IP location or something?

I don't know, it's not on the Japanese PS anymore, just the "full" game - apparently. Could never get a PSN Jap account to work.

I downloaded the Fifa Street demo yesterday. It was absolute garbage, awful game, i promptly deleted it

Err no... Fifa 08 is as close to realism you will get. PES2008 was a massive let down, i bought my PS3 just for that game. Konami are becoming a joke.
Thank God EA finally released a fantastic football game.
In terms of graphics yes it is, but the gameplay is still poor and doesn't match up to previous Pro Evo's. PES08 was a huge let down, but it is a victim of its own success, people were perhaps expecting too much from it, but for me, it is still the best in terms of gameplay.
And like Weaste said, call Konami a joke once Metal Gear Solid 4 is released.
