.....my choice of team would be -

Barthez (especially after today's performance)
Neville G
O'Shea
Rio
Silvestre
Giggs (Forlan)
Butt/Scholes
Keane
Beckham (Forlan)
Ruud
Ole

Lou Macari and Jimmy Greenhoff just made an excellent point imo. Veron may be a superb player, but he slows the game down. United have always had patience, but at the same time, played a fast and furious game, which suits us.

I really don't think Veron suits us. And regardless of a few great ones, the majority of his passes don't find a United player.

Veron has always been a square peg in a round hole in our midfield.

I agree with your team, except I'd play Scholes over Butt any time.

a midfield with becks keane scholes and giggs will be excelent if all of them find their old self... veron just won't fit in united's midfield... time to sell him ?

ole and van nistelrooy as striking partners is far too predictable...we need someone different ala cantona or someone like henry to partner either ole or van the man

You've hit the nail on the head there, Liv. My team would be more or less exactly like yours, exept I don't think we'll see much of Roy until late 2002 / early 2003 :( :

Barthez

Gary Rio O'Shea Silvestre

Beckham Scholes Butt Giggs

Ruud Ole

Give this side a good run and we'll reap the benefits.

Another point that was made (during the Chelsea game) is that United dominate a game more when they play with a high back line. That doesn't suit Blanc, though, as obviously it leaves him exposed against the quicker forwards.

Not knocking Larry, because I recognise the other qualities he brings to our game, especially in Europe.

I don't think we should rush Keane back and will suspend final judgement on Veron until end of October, although he was sensational for about 10 minutes on Wednesday night.

Ten exciting minutes against a kack Israeli outfit isn't good enough, as I'm sure you're aware arnie. His time is running out fast, and while I know how good he is, and will support him as long as he wears the Red shirt, this is no time to pick players based on reputations. I agree about Blanc though. IMO we should be easing Rio and O'Shea together as a partnership as the season goes on.

Excuse me. Wake up. ;)

This topic is called "Until January".

I think Veron should be played in Europe where the pace isnt as high. There he will find his old self maybe. We need a pacy or creative striker who also scores goals.Ole and Rvn are just too similar and easily marked by defenders.

Agree about Veron.

But Ruud and Ole are the best we have "UNTIL JANUARY". So they should play together as much as poss. in order to further develop their understanding.

Veron's old self is the inconsistent player we see now. The knock on him as a player in Serie A was only playing one good game in 6 and disappearing in big games. Also that he couldn't reproduce his international form for his clubs.

So SAF was stupid to buy him then?

We'll never know what your opinion was at the time as you never posted here.

I was against it at the time for the reasons I stated above and I thought our midfield was fine and didn't need major tinkering with. I would produce evidence if only the forum I used to post on hadn't gone kaput. :( As it is, I can only give you my word that my opinion has been consistent on Veron.

Out of curiosity, what was the general vibe here at the time? What was the split in favour/against his signing?

It's a shame that Veron hasn'tworked out. If his skills had been able to fit into the premiership it would have been fantastic., but it hasn't so it time to cut bait and get back to the midfield that made us great.
The team that Liv suggested was just about spot on.
Rio and O'Shea should be given the chance to start to build a partnership. I think they have the potential to be better than Bruce and Pally. Scholes and Keane are the perfect balance in midfield. Nick Butt is an ideal replacement for Roy Keane if he could just play further up the field. He has a tendancy to drop too deep.
Up front Ole and Ruud are excellent players but i'm still undecided whether long term they can form a partnership as good as Yorke and Cole did. They had a great season last year but i just have this feeling that Ruud and Diego would be a better partnership.
I'm problably wrong but i just have that feeling.

i would just like to say that Veron was the best midfielder on the park last night, he is one of the better midfielders in the clud. i am not impressed with Becham at all and question his captaincy Giggs or Butt would do.

The problem is that for ever good game he has, there are 4 or 5 when he's non-existant. As for the captaincy i think they should give it to Rio when Keane is out. I know he's only been at the club for a couple of months, but he's a born leader.
