Uniteds recent record in knockout competitions

With the new format of the Champions League, I am pretty undecided as to how United are going to do in the knockout stages. IMO a lot of our success in recent years has been down to being involved in league campaigns i.e. PL, and the CL format. However, recently in the good old knockout competitions, we have been far from unbeatable.

Since we've played in the CL final in 1999 we have been knocked out twice in the first knockout game and only once gotten past that stage only to be beaten in the semis. Our FA Cup record also leads a lot to be desired. Worthless Cup - not really worth a mention.

I'm wondering what the general feeling is out there as to why United are below par when knockout competition is the par to which we need to perform. Frankly, I think that unless something changes dramatically this year, we can only realistically hope for a League Championship. :(

cheer up mate, season hasnt even started yet.
after last season, id be more than happy with 'just the league'

Thanks pal, but I just can't help feeling pesimistic about it all. Nothing to do with signings. I believe we do have the players capable of performing, but there was a definate lack of something last season, especially in knockout competition (I actually must point out that in reference to the CL, I forgot that the format is the same this year and that the change takes place from next season). However, I suppose we'll have to wait and see.
