Sir Alex Ferguson's hopes of reinforcing his Manchester United squad before Saturday's deadline received a significant setback last night when he learned that a £4m bid for the Argentinian defender Nicolas Burdisso had failed.
Negotiations broke down with Boca Juniors because of their £7m asking price for the 21-year-old. Although United will instigate further talks, Boca's president Mauricio Macri, one of the wealthiest men in Argentina, has made it clear that his club are under no financial pressure to sell.

He described the deal as "cold" and confirmed that United's chief executive Peter Kenyon had "not sounded very enthusiastic" when told of Burdisso's valuation. "If Manchester United propose a good offer I think the player will travel to England during the next few days," Macri added. "If the money is good, we will let Burdisso go."

We have Gary coming back from injury soon. If they don't want to sell, fine. Use the money for a keeper or 4th striker.

Yeah right... after signing Escude we'll have enough defenders, a new striker is a necessity now...

Nicolas Burdisso

Position : Defender

Date of birth : 12 April, 1981

Team : Boca Juniors (Argentina)

Nationality : Argentina

Notes : Member of the Boca Juniors side which won the Toyota Cup over Real Madrid in 2000. Helped Argentina to second place in 2001 South American U/20 Championships with good defensive play. This led to qualification for the World Youth Cup later in the year. Helped Argentina win the World Youth Cup in 2001.

They even sold Riquelme for 7m pounds <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

Anyhow, any target we're not in negotiations with already is very unlikely to happen. In other words, if our offer for X was rejected, there's no time to go for a Y.

no one ive seen on this forum has really rated Burdisso though right is that the concensus? those that have seen him of course i mean.

I don't see buying a rb as a priority so I'm not upset this deal has fallen through (assuming we have limited money and can only buy so many players). Gary will be back in a couple of weeks. Hopefully, he'll stay healthy and that position will be sorted. And we do still have Phil as back-up. Granted, he hasn't been playing well. But at this point, if Barthez is going to be out for awhile, I think another goalkeeper is a higher priority and we still need another striker.

Well if he's the long haired chap who looks like batistuta, he nearly scored an own goal in the Boca match. Other than that, he was pretty good. ;)

So much for picking up Argies at cheap prices.

Completely different scenario

If Boca are looking £7 mill for a youngster he must be class!
But I'm not displeased the 'deal', assuming there was one as, unlike the Escude saga, there has been no confirmation from Old Trafford that they were even interested.
If reports are to be believed, at least it proves United PLC are willing to stump up more cash before the transfer deadline but I can't help but feel the money would be better spent in other areas. Should Escude eventually join (and I believe it's only a matter of time before United increase their bid) we should be well enough covered in defence. Midfield is fine. It's another forward that's a necessity and that's an area I would expect Fergie will look at that after Tuesday night. I would be very surprised if a lot of the groundwork to bring in another striker had not been done already.
