I didn't realize United did so well the very next season after the Munich air disaster. 2nd place, 55 points and 103 goals sound like a miracle considering who the club lost and the many quality teams in those days.

But I couldn't find much about the team online, does anyone have any links or information they'd like to share about that season?

From the RedCafe Wiki:

The Munich tragedy was a big shock for United, they last matches of the season a whole new team had to be build. Jimmy Murphy moved quickly to sign Emie Taylor from Blackpool and Stan Crowther from Aston Villa. They, together with Bill Foulkes, Harry Gregg and a mixture of reserve and junior players made a patched-up side to complete the season's fixture. This season the team was still being rebuilt with Wilf McGuiness, Warren Bradley and Albert Quixall, a record 45,000 pond buy from Sheffield Wednesday, coming into the side. United did very well in the league, the finished 2nd and scored 103 goals, Bobby Chartlon hits 29 goals. In the FA Cup they reached the third round, but lost there.

Brings back memories but I think that photo is more the previous season's post Munich team as Charlton and Viollet are missing.
My main memories of that season are drawing with Newcastle after being ahead 4-0 at half time. ( A geordie habit? ) and a trip to Norwich who I think were in Div.3 which involved getting up at about 3am to catch the football special. A very long day made even longer by the 3-0 cup defeat and being surrounded by very nice, friendly people who talked funny.

Sir Bobby's goal scoring record is superb as well. Amazing professionalism from him and the club to respond in such a manner.

I remember reading that United got several player loans in the wake of the Munich disaster, including from Liverpool, does anyone know if any of those players ended up staying for the 58-9 season?

I did not know this.

Manchester United had been invited to enter the competition by UEFA after their campaign in the previous year's tournament was damaged by the Munich air disaster. However the FA refused Manchester United permission to compete, arguing only the reigning English champions should be represented.

Ah, I'm sure you're right about the photo, it was labeled as the 1958-9 team in my defense. I found a better one and switched it in. Thanks!

I'm sure we didn't get any players from Liverpool. Crowther( Villa) and Ernie Taylor(Blackpool) were bought and played in 58/59 I think but the most successful loan was Warren Bradley, an amateur from Bishop Auckland, who went on to play for England.

Here are some pictures I found after a bit of digging, claim to all be from the 1958-9 season. I'll repost the action shots in the Classic Photo thread. Pretty nice haul!

Ah, I guess they offered to loan 5 players, but United didn't accept? Apparently this is a Shakley quote, found it on FB though so maybe not! Thanks for the info!

Bill Shankly - "it also opened a lot of peoples eyes to how the fans hatred has destroyed what everyone believed were unbreakable bonds between United and Liverpool - sure there was intense rivalry but no hatred - Liverpool had a place in United hearts because as soon as it was announced we would carry on after Munich, (many thought we would fold) Liverpool were straight in and offered United the pick of their reserve team and any other help we might need - Forest were the only other club to offer help...!
