United target two stars before Van Gaal arrives
Miguel Delaney

Manchester United hope to make at least two high-profile signings before the likely appointment of Louis van Gaal as manager, club sources have told ESPN FC.

United insisted on Saturday that no deal has been formalised with Van Gaal but -- although the appointment is not yet guaranteed -- there has already been significant contact with the 62-year-old Netherlands coach and certain terms have been discussed.

There have been talks over the make-up of Van Gaal’s backroom staff, and the subject of Republic of Ireland assistant manager Roy Keane -- linked with the position last week -- has indeed been broached, but current interim boss Ryan Giggs and former Netherlands international Patrick Kluivert are more likely to join his staff.

Kluivert, who is part of the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss' coaching staff for the Dutch national team, told talkSPORT on Saturday: “[Van Gaal] would be absolutely the first pick of any club, especially top teams everywhere in the world. He likes to let young players make their debut if ready for it.

“The most important thing at the moment is I'm personally enjoying working with him and with the Dutch national team. We're going to the World Cup and hope to do well. After that we'll see what happens and with me as well.”

He added he would follow Van Gaal anywhere in the world if asked to remain on his staff, saying: “It doesn't matter what club it will be if he asks me to join him, I would be absolutely honoured to be on his side.”

Regardless of their plans for the coaching team, United plan to press ahead with an extensive team rebuilding programme, some of which had been initiated by David Moyes. The Scot’s dismissal has delayed the anticipated signing of Southampton’s Luke Shaw, but sources state that deal is “very close” despite the Saints’ recent denial.

Old Trafford contacts have also said chief executive Ed Woodward is unhappy with perceptions the board did not properly back Moyes in the transfer market. ESPN FC was told that United missed out on “two major signings” due to the former boss’ prevarication.

United now plan to make a number of statement signings early on to prevent the chaos of last summer.

The interest in Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani and Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas has been well publicised, while sources say United may also consider going back in for Southampton’s Adam Lallana after attempting a move in January. The England international said on Saturday that he would make a decision over his future in the summer.

There is also interest in Everton full-back Seamus Coleman, and the English champions may hope to use Roberto Martinez’s admiration for United midfielder Tom Cleverley as leverage in a potential deal.

Delaney is pretty reliable. Good to see the club las learned from last summer and trying get the business done early. Must say, that list of players is great. Other reliable journalist running with the same story too, is SAF acting as a DoF or is Woodward going this?

The credibility of that article was ruined by the last line.
Why? Martinez is known to be a huge fan of cleverley, can definitely see him go for cleverley, who isn't a bad player, just isn't cut out mentally for our level.

Yeah right. I'm sure Martinez is desperate to offload the best right back in the league to get Tom Cleverley.

He won't be looking to lose him but at a certain price and if he wants to leave and if united really want him then he won't say no. I wouldn't want him personally, would rather let Rafael develop. Just saying that Martinez will probably go for cleverley regardless of any other deal.

I just hope that these "statement signings" have been sanctioned by whoever is about to be appointed manager. If Woodward is running around Europe looking for marquee signings to mark his territory, I'd rather he worked on pure business deals, which he seems good at.

Well, no point in getting worked up over what may be nothing but paper bollocks. But unless A) a deal has been made with a new manager and B) said manager has insisted we buy Cavani, that particular interest strikes me as positively bizarre.

Are you basing this on the fact he talked him up when he had him on loan? That's pretty standard behaviour I think. Or is there something else I'm missing? I can't see him going for Cleverley on current form.

A few journalist were saying that Cleverley is Everton's top target.

He's said quite a few times that he rates him really highly. Current form doesn't mean shit, as well. Gibson was laughed at here and he was a worse player then cleverley. He went to Everton and found his level and has been a very good player for them (apart from being injured this year). He'd also suit martinez's style. I know everyone loves shitting on cleverley, but he's a decent player just out of his depth at united and so he can't handle the pressure and all the scrutiny that comes with being at a top club. That's it.

Shaw is one of them surely. Hopefully Fabregas is the other. I like Cavani as a player also but we don't really need him.

Hed be a good premiership player, has strength and power. But if he comes, RVP is gone id say. Cavani is old as well.

Cavani would be a terrible waste of money, it makes no sense at all to sign him even if RvP is sold that cash could be spent on a younger player.

Why would Coleman come to us, he knows Rafael is easily on his level when fit, and we have no Champions League football. Cavani would be ridiculous unless Chicha and Welbeck both leave, and then it would still be random.

Kroos and Shaw is my guess. Still don't know for sure whether it was Reus and Kroos agent talking with Feruson yesterday at Old Trafford or not.

I really hope we pick up Carvalho. Talk around him has stopped since Moyes' sacking, but I think he could be a cornerstone of our midfield for years.

A real premiership player. With the right creative partner, we could soon have one of the best midfields in Europe.

I like Coleman. Rafael is injury prone and almost missed a lot of games this season and we need a quality right back to push Rafael to do better. I don't mind if we sign Coleman if Varela isn't ready. Coleman is probably between 15 million until 18 million. And he can also play as a right midfield or wing.

Coleman probably understands that despite Everton finishing above United, he will never win (or even fight for) the League at Everton. So basically by swapping Everton for United - he will lose out on European Football one season but come to a club that will be much stronger than Everton in the long run.

Sometimes you need to take 1 step back to take 2 steps forward etc

and rafael is prone to doing his diving-in-trick to often as emphasized by an irish pundit.

He has praised him since the loan as well. Recently with the petition shite he came out and backed Clevs and sang his praises. Its believed he is the number two target after Lukaku.

If Coleman is looking for a move and he is resigned to losing him then using him to get one of your own targets would make sense.

"Stars'', ''high profile signings'', those are my biggest problems because I'm more concerned with us getting the right player even if it means he is a $6m pound unheralded star . We should go by the type of player the team needs not the prominence of his name or his reputation . A signing like Cavani won't do us any good and will only create unnecessary confusion in an already crowded part of the team imo !

Cavani doesn't make any sense, would be really pissed if we waste money on him. I don't even think we need an attacking player more, but if we sign one I hope it's a winger with pace and goals, Griezmann for example :)

Those two would be ideal. Then a couple of tasty little flavours of the World Cup afterwards.

He's a year younger than Rooney.

for the money that is being touted he would be too much. Costa at the same price would be more value.

You have to factor in that if we bought cavani for lets say 50 million, he would immediately depreciate in value by maybe 15-20 million, so that if we tried to sell him, we would only get 25ish million.

If we were to sell fellani tommorow, we would be lucky to get maybe 16 million for him

i might be wrong but i won't be surprised if lvg don't sign any central defenders and instead move carrick over there. At Bayern he used demichelis as centre back, the emphasis being on someone who s good with the ball at his feet rather than someone who s good at defending

Doesn't really matters, I'm sure someone prominent (cough...saf...) is pulling all the strings in buying the said players (if the rumors are true), and i don't think LVG would mind a couple new "very good" players to add to his lists of players.

If Cavani was knocking in 40-50 goals a season I could understand it, but his goal scoring has hardly been prolific to say the least. A very bizzare transfer if it happens.
