This would many folks around here, very happy. You see some good young defenders emerging now in the various leagues, but this one must be the classiest. And I hope Martin Ferguson took a good look at Cisse while he was at there, if he wasn't indeed the real target.

UNITED STEP UP MEXES HUNT
by Adam Marshall

MANCHESTER UNITED are stepping up their interest in promising Auxerre defender Philippe Mexes.
The young Frenchman has long been admired by Sir Alex Ferguson, who remains in a strong position to sign the player, despite fierce competition from the likes of Roma, Internazionale, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Indeed, any deal brokered for the French Under-21 international could be a perfect parting gift from Ferguson, as it will mark a successful end to a prolonged transfer pursuit.

Martin Ferguson, United's chief scout, is understood to have been present at Auxerre's goalless draw with Guingamp on Saturday, as The Red Devils look to steal a march on their rivals for Mexes's signature.

Inter have also been tracking the central defender but his biggest idol is Old Trafford star Laurent Blanc, and Ferguson would love to tie up a deal before the end of the season, even if the 19-year-old was to remain with Auxerre until the summer.

Rumours, rumours, rumours

I'll believe it when it happens

Hopefully we will buy at least a top class central defender in the summer

I'm afraid the board may hold back the cash as a result of that massive 28 million pounds we shelled out for Veron

I've already got bored with it: It seems we are chasing every defenders in the world who can run with two legs if I need to believe all these rumours.

Well i read the day we signed Forlan on onefootball, that Sir Alex was saying that his brother was looking for a defender in Argie, and that's how he saw Forlan...

I don't know about this though, it would be good if it happens, Mexes likes Blanc, and they can (i think) play well togather, but still i mean the CL deadline is closed soooo..... :o

Not much new, other than the potential timing but anyway...
From TribalFootball:
Manchester United are expected to step up their bid for Auxerre youngster Philippe Mexes in the coming months.
The young defender is also a target for Liverpool, Arsenal and Inter Milan - but admitted last summer that he wants to join United.

United's chief scout Martin Ferguson watched Mexes in action on Saturday in the 0-0 draw with Guingamp.

It is understood that boss Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to sign Mexes before England's March transfer deadline.
