Nicky Butt was missing from the squad travelling to take on Olympiakos in Athens.
The players set off from Manchester Airport at around 9:30 this morning for Wednesday’s fixture with the Greek champions, but the tenacious midfielder could not overcome an ankle injury to make the trip.
The absentees of Ruud, Rio and Roy mean United are without the backbone of their side for the trip, but the squad still looks strong.
Having put in some confident displays for the reserves in recent weeks – with three consecutive clean sheets – Ricardo will be vying for a place on the bench ahead of Roy Carroll.
There are places for youngsters Kieran Richardson, who was outstanding in the reserves’ 3-0 win over Birmingham last week, and defender Lee Roche. Roche turns 22 on 28 October.
Richardson celebrated only his 18th birthday on Monday with an inclusion in the Champions League squad.
Quinton Fortune is also in the travelling party after some sharp displays in the reserves and some first-team substitute appearances.
