A teenage Carlisle United soccer prodigy is today set to make a dream move to Premier League champions Manchester United.

The News & Star can reveal that the Old Trafford giants have struck a deal with Carlisle United to sign 14-year-old goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

The Whitehaven-based youngster has been with the Blues’ centre of excellence set-up and is regarded as a star of the future by coaches.

His impressive performances with the Blues’ age-group teams attracted the attention of a host of top clubs, with Chelsea and Newcastle among Henderson’s admirers.

But Manchester United, who yesterday beat rivals Manchester City 3-2 to win the Community Shield at Wembley, are understood to have agreed a compensation package with Carlisle on Friday.

Henderson, who is also being monitored by England youth coaches, is now expected to sign for Sir Alex Ferguson’s club this week.

The St Benedict’s School youngster, who was identified by Carlisle’s football in the community coaches at a soccer school in Whitehaven, will now join one of the most famous youth set-ups in world football

The Manchester United academy, which has produced a stream of Premier League and international stars, is headed by former Red Devils striker Brian McClair.

What has this got to do with this story?

Do they just throw random facts in to make up the word count they need or something?

Good luck to the lad anyway...

Good luck to him even if it's too early to judge how far he can go.

Fergie wasn't happy with what he saw from De Gea yesterday.

De Gea is 20

If i was a kid, i'd be looking at that and thinking that theres no chance in hell of getting first team action unless De Gea is sold again or injured

I've never seen him but he needs to bulk up.

A 14-year-old 'keeper is hardly what we need if we're going to beat Barcelona.

Typical signing, we need a midfielder so Fergie goes ahead and buys a goalkeeper.

Doesn't really matter, he'll be getting the best youth coaching there is. I'm sure he won't be too upset if he eventually has to move to a different Premier League club to get regular football.

Sure he can do it in the sunny climate of Carlisle, but can he do it on a winters Tuesday night at Stoke??

So you implying he'd be better off turning down Manchester United?

from the point of view of getting to notch training? absolutely not
from the point of view of hoping to reach the first team? sadly, yes. We dont have a good track record of bringing keepers through
edit: actually most top teams purchase their keepers

Too short

Feck, should have kept VdS for six more years and this kid would have been ready.

His wiki says he's 5"6 but to me he looks shorter than the second kid from the right, and he's supposed to be 5"5.
Not him btw

De Gea is 20, and this kid is 6 years younger. So, if De Gea gives us 10 good years and this lad pulls a Stever Harper and stays on the bench for the best part of a decade we'll have a top replacement come in just as De Gea makes his move back to Spain.

Forward thinking from the boss...me likey.

Quoted for accuracy.

Isn't it hard to scout a teenage GK? I mean with outfield players it is easier by looking at dribbling, passing and skills level.

We sign youth all the time. It's a bit weird this is reported and got some coverage. I guess it's big news for their community. Good luck to him.
