Chris Eagles hit a superb early brace as United booked a place in this season's Manchester Senior Cup final.

The Reds were rarely troubled by the visitors en route to a comfortable victory, while new signing Rodrigo Possebon was handed his first appearance in a United shirt, coming on for just over half an hour as United eased towards the win.

The Brazilian showed some neat touches in his cameo, but the star of the show was undoubtedly Eagles, who had virtually sewn the game up single-handed after just 13 minutes.

The winger had United ahead after nine minutes with a superb 25 yard effort which caught City goalkeeper Richard Martin cold, before doubling the deficit with a screamer four minutes later.

Having lined up a free kick near the left touchline, Eagles opted to shoot rather than cross - a decision validated as his effort flew past Martin and into the top corner.

Eagles' contribution apart, the game was a keenly-fought contest with few chances. Kelvin Etuhu appealed vociferously for a penalty for the visitors, but United keeper Tom Heaton was rarely forced into action.

After the break, Tom Cleverley and James Chester both came close to adding a third, but in the end it was Eagles' brace which made the difference.
