Post Ferguson CM duos and trios. From Moyes to Hag let’s take a trip down memory lane and see where would you rank our midfield combos.

  1. Matic, Herrera + Pogba
  2. Carrick, Herrera + Pogba
  3. Carrick, Herrera + Fellaini
  4. Casemiro, Mainoo + Bruno
  5. McTominay, Fred + Bruno

Which was the midfield which worked absolute wonders, but only for a few months?

I remember a rare winning streak and the midfield was being praised a lot as the reason

Was it Matic, Herrera + Pogba?

Matic, Herrera + Pogba was the one for me that actually worked well but they were rarely all fit at the same time.

It had energy, height, power and technical ability.

The brief game or two we saw with Pogba and Fernandes together.

Matic and Pogba is probably my favourite. Tall, ball secure and physical.

Matic, Herrera, Pogba is likely the most balanced we've had. I recall a few games where Casemiro, Fred and Bruno were very good too. Always wanted to see more of that trio.

A bit of a curveball and I may be misremembering a bit but I remember a super short lived trio of Di Maria, Herrera and Blind.

For a few games that midfield was fantastic. Shame it didn't last.

The absolute refusal to put some respect on McFred's name. When City get titles rescinded and those two collect their PL winner's medals maybe history will look back with kinder eyes. There only rival they have for "most iconic duo of the past decade" is the fact that Dolly Parton and Sia released a single together. Honestly.

The midfield we had for that magical run of games in Van Gaal's first season where we beat Liverpool at Anfield etc and started playing some really silky stuff.

Carrick, Herrera, Fellaini

There was a really good overload that we'd have on the left with Blind, Fellaini and Young and then the right had Herrera, Mata and Valencia.

Matic/Pogba/Bruno in 19-20 probably is the best we've had all things considered.

The Carrick/Herrera/Fellaini midfield was very good as well but that's also probably due to the boring as feck style we mostly played and Carrick still being class.

Honorable mention to Casemiro/Fred/Bruno in 22-23, sneaky great combo whenever they played together in those teams.
