from soccernet:

Manchester United are now in a class of their own in the European transfer market.
Despite paying David Beckham £100,000 a week, United's annual turnover of £130million and £21m yearly profits allow them to pick off the best deals.

While Leeds, with £77m of debt and Chelsea, carrying £97m borrowings, are under transfer embargo until they sell players, Arsenal have a new stadium to fund and baulked at PSV Eindhoven's £14.5m asking price for Mark Van Bommel.

Newcastle anticipate Champions League money, which funded the signings of Titus Bramble and Hugo Viana for £13m yet they are still £65.8m in debt.

Manager Bobby Robson admitted there would be no more spending this season.

In Europe, Barcelona and Real Madrid can compete with United but even they are having to tread warily as football's recession bites.

Real bought Luis Figo for £37.2m and Zinedine Zidane for £48.7m but are now feeling the pinch. They are trying to offload eight players, including Steve McManaman. Barcelona want to sell £100,000-a-week Brazilian Rivaldo.

Last week it was revealed that Italy's Serie A clubs had made a combined loss of £450m, meaning traditional spendthrifts Juventus and Lazio are out of the equation.

our money men have done well over that last few years, many including myself have questioned the way United was ran, but we've proved over the years that its good to balance the books, and not buy serieA or real madrid style.. due to tis reason, we're reaping the rewards.. ATM, i don't think there's a club in world football that can compete with our spending.. a chance for us to rule Europe!!!!

Effectively we've just spent a year and a halfs pure profit. Good on Kenyon, but let's not get carried away and continue to expect more signings.

I meant the fee itself for Rio ONLY which everyone was saying was ridiculous, too much, etc etc, as you well know ;)

Credit to Mr Kenyon. I just can't see the kind of transfers such as Veron and Rio would have happned under Edwards.

They would have happened under Edwards, just not so close together.

Actually, the figures they quoted are wrong. BBC announced a while back that UTD had released their half yearlyprofit figures to the city
and that was £30 million (including the new Beckham deal). It is likely that the full year profits topped £50 million. That article from soccernet was taken from an article in the Mail on Sunday, where they broke down the figures further. There was no mention of the Nike deal which kicks in this season (£23 million a season for the next 13 years). So the picture is even healthier.

:D
