United open Carrick talks

From the posts on here I'm guessing I may be in the minority with this but I think it's great that we are. He still has a lot to offer.

Good. Makes sense for cover if he's willing to reduce the amount of games he plays further because our options in CDM are seriously lacking even with him around (as Blind isn't considered for some strange reason).

He's a very useful player even on one leg and an all round decent bloke too.

For reduced wages and a much reduced role in the team, I don't mind. But if he's still starting a decent amount of games next season then we'll have made a mess of another transfer window.

I can see us needing to go back to using him next season too. So glad to hear it.

Great news. Still our best and DM or deep lying play-maker. We just need to manage his games

Good. Doesn't mean we don't need a holding mid in the summer though.

Sorry to derail, but, being not good enough in midfield is not strange at all.

We still need to midfielders to replace the two we've sold this year. One can be Perreira and the other needs to be absolute world class.

I am sure we will be in the market for a midfielder in the summer. Jose sold Morgan and Basti and after the injury/suspension period, we are really short in the area. I doubt he will want to go through same situation next year.

Plus, as good as Carrick is for the dressing room and the odd game, he has regressed visibly this year.

We need numbers so it's understandable to an extent.

He's featured far too much this season though.

Essentially, this. Herrera, Pogba, Carrick, Pereira, plus another, would be an ideal selection to pick from.

That's not a good place to be, at all, to be honest. When your best DM is 35 and has to be hauled off at half-time from high-tempo/high-press games it shows you've a made mess of sorting out your midfield.

I'd agree with that. Happy for him to be 5th option next season. But he should be behind Pogba, Herrera, a new DM and maybe even Pereira. He can be a positive influence with the younger players and help in the early stages of cup competitions. But if we're in a position where we regularly rely on him to play in crucial games, that'd be pretty disappointing.

I suspect his experience and know how off the field is important to Mourinho. Rooney is the one that has to go though.

If we are going to sell Fellaini then that is OK.

If we are going to be keeping Fellaini as well then please no. No more.

Be that as it may, he's still our best DM and should be given another contract.

Well we mustn't have his replacement lined up. Only reason I can see why we would extend his contract. He's been an amazing player for us but you can see lately that he's just tailing off now.

Needs to move on and we need to actually replace him instead of relying on such an old midfielder. It is ridiculous to be honest that we still are not replacing him. Happy for him though on a personal level.

People constantly seem to say we need another 2 centre mids, despite us buying quite a few in recent years.
Carrick remains though, and it's quite the tough job to replace him

Even if we got two midfielders in there's nothing to say they'd be able to hit the ground running, if we can afford it we'd be mad not to keep Carrick on next year.

I think it'll be him or Fellaini here next season, and I'd prefer Carrick. Gives is breathing space to get the right CM in, although i still hope that happens this season.

Pogba, Herrera and new CM as the starters or heavy rotation. Carrick and Pereira playing less and when needed.

He's not good enough anymore.

Not any more it isn't. Even Fellaini is ahead of him in the pecking order, based on performances too, so that tells you sth. I can easily name 6-7 DMs in this league alone that "on the whole" are better than Carrick.

We won't be relying on him, so I'm fine with this. A decent back up. His forms a bit off, but til a few weeks back he'd been having a good season. I still think he can offer something.

Great news tbh. Whenever teams man mark Carrick, we always struggle, as we can't shift the ball fast enough to isolate opponent fulls back with our wingers. Which is exactly why we need a technically good midfielder for next season (but we'd be stupid to get rid of Carrick and expect the deeplying playmaking responsibilities to come from this player, as Pogba isn't particularly great at controlling the game.)

Even so, it's not enough to get someone who's simply better than our worst options. It's about finding someone we wouldn't need to replace or upgrade for a few years. It's easy to upgrade the squad players but that's not the goal.

Keep Carrick as cover, does he fancy going into coaching? He's not completely finished but he should be used very sparingly next season.

Bring back Pereira and sign one other midfielder, sell Fellaini.

Carrick may not be good enough anymore, but I guess he earned it by play, especially from his performances during the first half of this season. Good cover, and since he'll be in a reduced squad player role plus just one-year extension, there's no harm for us and instead his experiences and characters helps especially to the young players.

Hopefully this is wrong. Don't want to see him in our team next season.

I love Carrick as a player, but he's approaching 36 and needs to either move on or retire.

If he stays, I don't want to see him starting more than 10 games. He should be used strictly as a backup player.

We need to sign his replacement this summer. Pereira is a good alternative to Pogba and Herrera. But we lack a controller type who can dictate from deep.
